Hives

Did you know that an allergic reaction to a medication can include hives? Hives is an itchy annoying rash over your neck, face, arms and sometimes your chest. Did you know that they can last up to 6 weeks? Did you know that most home remedies aren't working for mine and the doctor says that's because the real problem is the medication that is taken internally? Also, some pain reliever medications can actually make them worse. Which explains why mine went from a bit better to my eye being almost swollen closed. It is red and itches soooooo bad. That was caused by the Motrin I took for a headache. I will take the headache over the itch any day. My doctor has me on an anti histamine medication, a steroid, and told me to stop itching. Easy for her to say. I also stopped the medication that she thinks caused it. Cool showers may also help which is good for the time of year it is here. Very hot. So what do you when there is an itch you can't scratch?

I go nuts. I have eye itching problems. Sometimes I wish I could take my eye out, scratch it and stick it back in. Could you take oatmeal baths? I remember doing that when I had chicken pox. Or make an oatmeal paste and put it over the rash, except for the eye area of course. Hopefully the steroids work soon.

I tried the oatmeal bath but in cool water. It helped for a little while. The eye and any area that sweats are driving me mad.

I find someone else to scratch it for me. Seriously, though, I feel you on the itching. The pain meds they gave me when I had Kid 2 made my face itch so horribly. The nurses strongly encouraged me to try to ride it out, but I couldn't. I told them I'd rather be dealing with the pain than the itching. And of course when someone tells you not to scratch them, it seems to make you scratch more... Is that reverse psychology in action?

Yes, it makes it itch twice as bad. It is so horrible! That part that bothers me the most is right by my eye. That spot where my glasses sit itches so bad.

@yukimori Now that I know that Motrin makes it worse, I should do better. I've been using the cream but I can't put it near my eye. The heat we have been having really made it bad so I tried some powder in the sweaty places and that helped too.

@TLChimes I have stress-related rashes that show up on my legs from time to time. Usually a few applications of hydrocortisone cream helps stop the itching enough that I'll let it heal. I've occasionally used calamine lotion and even antibiotic cream like Neosporin seemed to help in a pinch. Of course you've probably already tried all of those things. I hope you're able to get some relief from it soon!

That is a tough situation.. maybe I 'll find a feather to soothe my itch. I don't know if it will help.. maybe use a calamine lotion or something local to feel better.

The only place I can't use that is my eye .... which is the part that is bothering me the most. If it keeps swelling I think I'll head back to the doctor.

hives are very annoying to have to say the least its very uncomfortable, I would say you could try a baking soda paste on the itchy area
