Is this site still a discussion site ?

I have rarely started a rant here. This one will perhaps not provoke a salutary shock, but I think it is interesting.
In the previous myLot site, if you did not agree with a response, you could tell it in a comment and start to discuss, or you could not comment at all. A few days ago a friend told me that he had responses deleted by another member. I was thinking that the use of this button was only intended for spammers, but it seems that it is used as a quick way to settle the matter when you disagree with somebody : nuke the response/comment !
It happened today for me for a response that I gave to a new member. It was the common way used in another writing site for the discussions started by admins : there was no place for critics, and they were deleted quickly, but the brown nosers were welcomed.
If this becomes a fashion, myLot will soon be a butterflies and rainbows world where everyone will be cute, everyone will be kind.
I am a big meanie ! I want to discuss ! If there is a big problem with one of my responses/comments, the right way is to report it to &GoAskAlice who will decide if it has to be deleted or not.
And if you do not like people wanting to discuss, block me, and stay with your fellows in your candy-colored fantasy land.
I give you my thoughts : if this site wants to stay a discussion site, this "delete" button has to disappear. And maybe also the blocking feature.
I am waiting for your opinion about this "handy" delete button. I promise I will not make use of it if you disagree.

This reminds me of when we used to have the star rating and people would down rate because somebody didn't share their views. People like that do not belong on this site.

@topffer I did not really care that much about the stars. I do care about people copy/paste even their own content from another site. i may use same topics but I write fresh posts for here. I also think that we just do things differently here and B articles do not fit. Oh and toppie I would never delete you.

I never used the negate for anything else than flaming trolls, and I was not using it every week, but some members were not so kind.
This one was belonging to the other site, maybe she needs an adaptation period. I see a lot of people coming from Bubblews here. One of them today re-posted here several articles posted in the previous days at B (due to the number of discussions started, I thought first that it was a plagiarist). myLot should accept only original content or many will try to have it both way.

I agree with you wholeheartedly! Allowing a discussion owner to remove responses and comments (or a response owner to remove comments below that response) is liable to degrade the quality of a discussion.
There may be responses and comments with which we disagree - sometimes very strongly - but, unless they are in violation of the Guidelines, what someone else opines in the course of a discussion should be allowed to stand. Only the Moderator or the actual author of a response/comment should have the right to delete it.
I have to say that I've used the 'Delete' button occasionally but only when some spammer has lifted his leg against my response (and I have generally reported the nuisance before deleting it).
Please, @goaskalice, would you consider adding this to the 'wants' list?

I also think this leaves it open to abuse. I realize that we are now allowed to block people, which I disagree with but it is what it is, and at least I am not wasting my time replying if someone blocks me. On the other hand, someone might decide not to block me but rather just delete any and all my comments/responses from their discussions regardless of whether or not they are "quality" just because they decided that they do not like me, and then I have not only wasted my time but also any potential earnings I might have received.

I agree so often with your wise responses and comments that... well, I do not remember to have ever disagreed with you, but I want to be able to do it if it happens in the future.
More seriously, owl, you told it with better words than mines and I have nothing to add.
I was upset by this incident yesterday, and I wrote &goaskalice like I would have done elsewhere. Then I decided that it was too early to wake up Alex with a beep.

I realized the existence of this button when I received a PM from a friend a few days ago telling me that he had several responses deleted by a member. I thought that the only legitimate use of this button was for spammers, but the truth is that some members are using it like an easy way to remove a response when they disagree. Thinking about it, I might have hurt this member. It was unintentional : it is not in my habits to be evil with others.
It is difficult to tell if I have had something else deleted : when GAA was deleting a response we were receiving a notification giving the reason. There is no notification sent when a member use this button. Except if we verify all our posts, we are not aware of a deletion.
It is hypocrite.
I believe you are right : we have to stay with friends that we trust

Advantage: Having control of what goes on and what doesn't go on a post gives the writer ownership of the page complete say as to what direction a topic might go in.
Disadvantage: There is a possibility for misuse of discussion and could lead to someone being discouraged about making any further comments if they are to be deleted.
I'm tossed as to which method does work best. My vote is left unchecked here.
PS: I never delete comments and won't in the future unless they are totally rude or abusive.

I am not sure that what you are pointing as an advantage, is really an advantage. In my mind, it is only a sneaky way to handle a discussion. I have started discussions that were intended to be funny, and they became serious, and the opposite occurred too. Somewhere, it was a failure, but I accepted it and the discussions have been certainly more interesting that if I had tried to retain the cap despite of ebbs and winds.
Because I read several of your discussions and comments, I know that you can have strong opinions, but that you are opened to critics and wise enough to make a fair use of this button. Sadly, many members are not so wise.

@Bluedoll The member who deleted my response was only two days old. I hope he will evolve and understand that this is a discussion site. I had just followed back, and responded to one of his discussion to make him know that I was really following. If my response hurt, it was unintentional. I agree with you that if this was happening several times with the same member I would stop to respond or comment.
We are not always sharing the same opinion, but it has always been a pleasure to discuss with you.

@topffer I understand, good point too and also think it is not the right for someone to use delete if they want a discussion at all. I would stop having a discussion with that person if they were like that. Which is not very productive. People should be reasonable. Sorry your comments were not respected. I appreciate you making them.
If the delete disappeared wouldn't miss something I hardly ever use.
Delete however might be useful for something like all kinds of silly remarks left on a post but not so silly as to bother admin about it. Just delete them and carry on.

@topffer We should be able to disagree with others without fear of being ridiculed for it. I don't understand why people have to get their panties in a bunch over something they disagree with. Good grief, we all have a right to our opinion, and we should be free to exerciseit, but I guess not. That is sad too.I don't think that anyone should delete anyone elses comments or responses. Now, if it is their own, then that might be a different story. I frankly like the delete feature, especially when it comes to deleting our own discussions.

@rosekiss I was amazed when I realized that my response had disappeared. I also think that it has to be an admin privilege to delete a response or a comment, and that members should not be allowed to do it.
I have never deleted a discussion here... I wanted to delete one a few days ago. I had asked for some help for two computer problems and I managed to solve them myself before I got any response. I came back the day after to delete it and I had two responses, so I commented and kept it.

Yes, you have a a very valid point to make. I feel that 'delete' option should be available with a user to 'delete' his own posts or comments/responses.
If a user does not like comments made by any other user, then 'Deleting' others' comments or responses does not seem justified. He could better leave it as it is and may not even press the 'like' button, if he does not like that particular response/comment.
If a user is allowed to 'delete' others comment, then those users who simply 'read' a discussion to make themselves aware of the topic being discussed would be deprived of different views received on the discussion.
Also, to me it seems inappropriate (read discourteous) to 'delete' any user's comments. If the comments are offensive, it would be better to report to admin.

I agree completely with you. We are on the same line. I will add that I did not received any notification for the deletion, so it can be used as a sneaky way to remove responses/comments several days later to make a discussion look differently than what it was at first.
In the Roman antiquity there was something called "damnatio memoriae" : names were removed from all public monuments when people were no more "politically correct". More recently, in the 20th C in some countries, the no more "politically correct" people were removed from official photos. We would not accept this kind of hypocrisy today, and this behavior is unacceptable here. The delete button should be an admin only privilege !

@topffer In the US certain people are trying to erase people they don't like from our history from monuments and other public places. I hope they don't destroy our Civil War battlefields by removing statues and monuments of the losing generals. A country should not try to erase its history or the people who made it. Those who don't know their true history are in danger of repeating it. What happened, happened. Even good people make mistakes. Sometimes people also have to choose between two evils.

Wow, someone did that? I also thought that button was only meant for spammers (and trolls).
Although this site is a discussion site, we also have to remember that we have to play nice ("no personal attacks, flaming, harassment, or trolling of any kind"). It's okay to agree to disagree and discuss things, so long as we can do it in a civilized manner.

You see, it is not in my habits to hurt somebody intentionally. I flame only plagiarists here. I thought about it and I might have hurt this member, but it was unintentional and indirectly : a general discourse that might have be taken personally. I did not knew this member before on the other site, I followed back yesterday, and in my mind I was showing that I was really following when I responded. No bad intention behind.

I always thought that if you have a "like" button , it should always come with an "unlike" button. That way, nobody's discussion gets deleted unless it has been reported to the admin and the admin has to make the decision on the deletion.

We do have an 'Unlike' ... but only to cancel a 'Like' that you gave by mistake or want to change your mind about. I think that is as it should be. When MyLot had a 'dislike' button, it was abused so much by trolls and congenital haters that MyLot removed it, in response to many requests. Exactly the same thing happened in Bubblews.
If a response or comment is REALLY offensive, it automatically becomes a Guideline violation and so should be reported and, I believe, it should only be possible for the moderator.or its author to delete it.

Jlyn, I also found weird to have a 'like' without the opposite, but, objectively, I was not using often the 'negate' and I was among those campaigning against it. I would accept a 'hate' button, if it is not anonymous. If it is not, we will have again trolls abusing it.

Not everyone is going to agree in a real discussion with many people participating. It is disagreement that often keeps a discussion going. The longer a discussion keeps going, the more people earn. If we keep an open mind, we can be courteous in our disagreements and we might even learn something.

There is no discussion possible if everyone has to agree with the starter. If the response is not offensive, it is pleasant to discuss with somebody not sharing completely the same opinions. If the arguments are good, I can change my mind. Open-mindness should be mandatory to join myLot.

I was not speaking of the blocking feature here. I am not sure it is a good feature for a discussion site, but I give it the benefit of the doubt, because it is a good way to get rid of trolls or of a personal enemy.
I was only speaking of the possibility given to a member to delete freely a response/comment, because he disagrees with the responder. I think it should be an admin only button to control if the response/comment is or not against the guidelines and to delete it if it is.
There are some members posting good discussions, but this site has not enough members yet to reach cruising speed. 2 years ago hundreds of discussions were started every day, and it was more easy to find discussions matching your interests. At the time the interface had categories, so you could directly jump to the topics interesting for you. myLot started to pay again only 3 weeks ago, and I am optimistic for the future when I see some new members like you starting good discussions.

There are meaningful discussions on here, but the number of these discussions varies, of course, depending upon your definition of "meaningful" and what you want to discuss. However, I think that one of Top's valid points is that there might be far less "meaningful" discussions on here if people just start deleting comments/responses with which they do not agree. If that starts happening on a regular basis, then people really do not have an incentive to "discuss" a topic, especially if they do not agree 100% with the original poster of the discussion.

I was thinking that you were a warrior and I see that you are avoiding the battle. Ideally, we should not block others to be able to discuss, but it can be an interesting feature to not be anymore upset by a public enemy.
I thought first that it was censorship. When I read the responses I see that several members are seeing it as a dictatorship and it can also be dictatorship, depending of the reason of the deletion. Censorship or dictatorship should be an admin privilege on a discussion site, or we will no more be able to discuss.

I don't really care about the block or delete options. I've never really needed to block anybody....I mean unless they were following me all over myLot and repeating everything I said or something like that. But the edit option, that's the one I love. I've used it many, many times so far. The old myLot, if you made a typo, you had to live with it. That drove me nuts. So I'm glad we have the chance to fix up typing errors, etc. I always catch them right after I post, too....so I hurry up and edit them like nothing even happened.

I have never blocked anybody, but I am blocked by a member for a discussion I started 5 years ago. Thinking about it, it is probably better for both of us : this member started recently a discussion in my professional field of competence, and the conclusions were completely wrong, so I would have had to strongly disagree again.
The edit is probably the best improvement of the new interface. I am not a native English speaker, and I make grammatical mistakes often. You will hardly believe it, but in my own language I am very picky with grammar : I collect grammar books, I participate to grammar contests... I am ashamed each time I realize that my incompetence concerning English grammar has been illustrated again in one of my responses/comments. Thanks to myLot, there is an edit button now

I also like to have an edit button here. I am not a native English speaker, and I make many grammatical mistakes. I feel ashamed when I read one, and I correct it. It is a big improvement to have this possibility. I am not against the possibility to delete our own responses or comments, but only against the possibility to delete them in our own discussions. I have received no notification for this deletion. I am not reading what I wrote several years ago, so it can be a sneaky way to remove responses or comments that one do not like several days later.

I agree with a lot of what you've said. Using the delete button to silence someone who doesn't agree with you is the coward's way out. I don't care how much I disagree with someone's opinion here. I will never use it to invalidate their beliefs simply because I happen to believe differently than they do.
I somewhat agree that the delete button needs to go. I like being able to directly take care of spammers on my own posts. Haven't had to use it for that yet (knock on wood!) but I like not having to harass support with additional reports when I can do it myself. But the fact that I can delete comments under mine in your discussion... no.
...and while I'm trying to think of circumstances that would justify having the delete button, I can't come up with a valid reason besides taking care of spam. So yes, the delete button should probably go.
I'd like for them to keep the edit button around, though. It's so convenient to be able to fix typos and replace images when I forget that my iPod lies about their orientation. My suggestion on that to avoid having issues with it is to keep a public record of the edit history.
I think they should keep the block feature, too. I've never used it, and I don't plan to, so I don't know if this is actually in effect or not. What I'd do is make members fill out a short form to explain why they're blocking that user. That way, if someone is blocked with numerous users saying it's because of harassment or spamming, the staff could review that and take action. Or am I spewing glitter and rainbows by even suggesting that we keep it around?

We agree for the delete button. I do not see it as a coward's way out, but as a kind of censorship that should not exist on a site like this one without the intervention of an admin.
If there is a button that I also want to keep, it is the edit button ! It is a very good improvement to the old myLot.
The block feature should ideally not exist in a discussion site, but as it can be useful to take rid quickly of a troll, I do not know if it has to be controlled by an admin. I have blocked nobody, but I am blocked by an old member (with quite as many successive accounts than the lamb) for a sarcastic discussion that I started 5 years ago (I do not see any other good reason). The discussion is still here, as it was following the guidelines. After it, this member reported me for nothing, insulted me, etc and blocked me when the new interface came. Honestly, I prefer to be blocked than to bear with this kind of behavior. If I had to fill a form to ask it, I would probably have soon an opportunity to do it.

@topffer As soon as the power reverts exclusively to the admins, though, we're going to be hearing about 'freedom of speech' and how deleted discussions infringes on posters' rights. Then we'll be trotting out the old replies about the playground belonging to myLot, and them getting to control what goes on here because they own it...
I'll take that over one disgruntled user wreaking havoc across the site any day!

I do agree that offensive comments, especially some that give out personal information, can and should be deleted as soon as possible. In addition, they should also be reported to Admin, so that Alex can determine whether or not further action should be taken.

In the previous interface of this site, you had to report what was "offensive" for you, and an admin was deleting or not the response/comment if it was against the guidelines. I reassure you : a personal attack is against the guidelines and is offensive, flaming or trolling is always offensive too. But it is not offensive to disagree with a member and to talk politely about it.
