Why Don't I Do It?

Everyone I know is writing books. Or has written books. Or will be writing a book when NaNoWriMo comes around in November. I have written a lot of poetry. It's something I used to do and blog about daily. I love flash fiction and short stories, and have won numerous contests for all of the above. So, I wonder sometimes - why don't I write a book? Note the key element shared by all of the writing I have mentioned. They are all short. Books tend to be long. Am I lazy? Of course, that goes without saying. But it's more than that. I think I ran out of things to say, stories to tell. I have a great idea for a book. But I didn't write it. I started writing another idea and did 8 chapters, then I got bored and wandered off. I bore myself. That doesn't bode well. Show of hands here. Have you written a book? Are you writing a book? Do you have a great idea for a book and plan to write it? Just how unmotivated can you guys make me feel?

I would like to but I just can't get things right. I have great ideas a d can describe them in detail but when it comes to adding dialogue and actually turning the idea into a story, I just choke. Like others have said, I judge myself very harshly. One day I will finish one, but that day is not today.

@Rollo1 I guess I don't really have the desire to learn it. Honestly I would love to find someone to colaborate with, someone I can tell my story to and then they can flush it out and fill in the blanks so to speak to turn it into a complete novel. I am wary of using just anybody though. I really do believe I have great ideas and great stories so I don not want to tell them to just anybody. That is a trust issue on my part. One day when the time is right, I know it will all work out.

If you don't feel comfortable with dialogue, there are courses online you could take or even just look up some writing sites that will give you tips.

I have not written a book! About one year ago I thought to write a cooking book, I checked the instruments to write an e-book, I started... I stopped immediately. Too complicated for me.

You can get a program that will convert it for you. There are e-pub software programs out there for free. Mobi comes to mind. I think I would love to have a cookbook from you, you are such a great cook.

@Rollo1 I am pretty sure that I have downloaded Mobi, I have to be more patient to learn how to use it. If I ever write the book, the first copy is for you.

I can totally unmotivate you. I have written a book, done 7 or 8 revisions, and have recently gone back to it after a 2 or 3 year break. I edited five chapters and haven't gone back to it since. My biggest problem, I believe, is distraction (the computer) and fatigue (due to my fibromyalgia symptoms). I keep praying that I can remotivate myself but it just isn't happening. I'm disappointed with myself. I have other ideas for future books but will not start another until I finish one otherwise I'll end out with a bunch of unfinished books.

Motivation is the hardest part of the whole process, because you need it to get through the less exciting bits - like editing.

I'm never motivated to write a book. I would rather read books that have already been written! I'm not all that crazy about poetry. My sister is the writer in the family. She loves to write. She had an article published in a magazine with her own byline. She has started a few books or stories and then life got in the way of her finishing them.

Everyone hates poetry, except those people who write it. And some of them write such bad poetry, it makes even poets hate poetry. Life is a big obstacle to writing a book, that is true.

I have not, but people tell me I should. I am like you in that regard. I get bored easy, including with my own thoughts.

There could be other reasons to write - to leave something of your thoughts to future generations of your descendants, perhaps? I don't know what I think about it, but it's an idea.

I want to write a book, but I'm not convinced that I could write anything that long, and certainly not if it's fiction. I keep hoping I'll get an idea for a non-fiction book though, but it hasn't happened yet.

They say that you should write what you know, write what you are passionate about. Maybe that's my problem, I don't know anything. But I sure you do. What about photography?

Thanks for the suggestion @Rollo1 . Unfortunately I don't think I'd have anything to say about photography that hasn't already been said hundreds of times before. I think I'll have to search elsewhere.

NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month. It is held every November. If you sign up, you are pledging to write a novel in one month. There is a certain number of words you must write every day. The goal is to finish a book during the month of November. It is a contest that is held online. You can check it out here.
November 1-30. The world needs your novel.

It takes a lot of discipline, that's true. I lack that as well.

You could compile your poems and stories into an anthology and self publish on a print on demand site like Lulu. A book isn't just a novel though it is well worth creating a novel too.

Ha-ha, I have asked myself those questions for 5 years. Why haven't I taken advantage of it? Not sure. Afraid if success? Afraid if a little hard work? Again, not sure. But now that you brought it up, yes, I have a few book ideas. Maybe I should just do it. November is "write" around the corner. :)

@Rollo1 I know how you feel about failing. I hate to fail as well. But they are very helpful. They give you a minimum of how much to do everyday. :)

Yes, it is your own expectations that cause the trouble. I try to keep others' expectations of me low, so that's not a problem. It's what I will think of myself that worries me.

You can compile those poems from the blog you mentioned and call it a book of poems. Or you can compile your stories and publish! Go ahead. For sure we will grab a copy. Good luck! Convinced yet?

I don't know. Once I self-publish poetry, it's a done deal. Not sure I can do it. Do I want to? I guess I don't know how I feel about it.

I am not a good writer, but I do have an idea for a children's book. Who knows if it will ever come alive!

You should do it. A children's book doesn't need fancy writing, it needs an engaging story. If you have a good story, go with it.

@Rollo1 I do have a great story line for a #children's book (according to me) it doesn't mean that others would like it.

I have always wanted to write and book and I can come up with several ideas but I just haven't done it yet. I don't know why either. It can be very frustrating.

I think the key is to just start. Just start writing and see what happens. You can put it together later, but get a start and then it may just flow from there. Well, that's what they tell me, anyway.

@Rollo1 That sounds about right, I think I have heard that before too. I may just have to give it a try soon.

Long things, like books, intimidate me. I do have a rhyming children's Christmas story. I need to illustrate it, it has been five years since I wrote it. I am joining you in your lack of motivation.

you should do what is best for you. write a book only if that is what you want to do.

I want to finish my book, but I guess the main reason I haven't is I really am afraid people would either hate it or not bother reading it and it would get cluttered with all the really great authors. I don't know. Maybe I am being too hard on myself. Also the fact that I have been a little lazy and busy at the same time.

@Rollo1 Anja, Too bad that you are not motivated to write a book, because I am persuaded that you have quite a few books inside of you, ready to be written. Give yourself a kick and start writing.
