These snakes only get about 8 inches at the max. We find them all the time in leaves and under rocks in the yard. They don't bite and even if they tried they could never open wide enough to bite a human. I'm told they eat ants, termites and other small insect like baby crickets. They come in two species, Smooth and Rough Earthsnakes. The smooth ones have smooth scales, the Rough Earthsnake has scales that are keeled like the keel on a boat. Other than that they are almost indistinguishable.

@loki1982 Around here, I think the smallest snakes we have are coral snakes. I usually see more bull snakes than anything else, although there are a few different species of rattlesnake around here.
Have you ever seen the "manly" wildflower photograph? The photographer was surprised by a mojave green rattler while shooting wildflowers... it's one of my favorites.

Very tiny and thanks to @MALUSE for suggesting it. Never mind the size of it I am phobic about snakes.

Is this the same as a garter snake? They are great for the garden and will eat slugs, woohoo!

@foki1992 As much as I am not a big fan of snakes that is adorable. I would have loved seeing that baby.
