Yelling at My Kids..

When my children were younger and i couldn't get their attention i would yell at them to get over here or call out their whole name Sometimes it worked and other times i'd get even more upset so then there i'd go chasing them down I didn't care how funny it looked because i was on a mission to teach them a lesson. Funny thing is i learned more than they did. I learned all it did was keep me upset and frustrate me more, so to stop this i'd ignore them...then when they asked for something i'd continue to ignore them. After awhile this got them to ask why i was doing that?..I responded with "when i call you and you ignore me i figured it is a two way street..you can either come when i call or i can ignore you." "What do you want me to do?..going to leave it up to you to either show me respect or have a Mother who doesn't care about you and will let you grow up to be a nobody." This seemed to do the trick and after that even though i still got the" aww mom wants us", they came and either helped me or stayed put. Now they are all adults and everyone of my 5 lives close enough to me. Even though my children said i liked yelling at them I chose to say it was Motivational Speaking for the Selective hearing!

My kids will ignore me. I can repeat their names but will be ignored. I hate it. My daughter si the worse, she will either ignore me. Get tired of me calling her, than yell at the top of her lungs - what! I tell her I am not yelling across the house to come here.

@Rosekitty Yes, I do love my kids. I do plan on doing that. My teen son and i was telling my daughter about that one day. She responded by saying she isn't having any kids.

I tried to pull back on my yelling when I saw little grade school kids copying how I was interacting with my son and yelling at him. I am a loud and authoritative person. I like what I see my daughter-in-law do, she leans over and whispers in her daughters' ears what she wants them to hear. Never embarrasses or shames them.

@GardenGerty..yes many things have changed now since when my children were kids..I never embarrassed them..in fact when my oldest had his brand new bike taken away from him by a group of kids, i took him and his friends to the leaders house..walked in their door..saw the bike..looked at the people all over the house and walked the bike right back out of the house..i guess they were so shocked someone would do that they never questioned me or harmed me...My kids looked up to me as their hero after that..

@GardenGerty....that's an interesting thing that your daughter in law does! It's a new one that I've never come across. Indeed the times have changed and we have to employ different tactics. Today's kids have a lot to say for themselves, and some of 'yesterday''s heavy handed methods would probably fall on deaf ears LOL

@VickiJW i was jest jokin', ms. vicki. i'm hopin' that's what it means, though i could sure 'ppreciate more time with 'em. when they do come to visit, there's so many others to visit that sometimes i kinda feel like a b&b. but, that's alright. i feel the same, my friend.

@crazyhorseladycx - no, I don't think that has anything to do with it. You still have them visit, as I do, and often that is quality time that you don't get when they're with you all the time. When they are scattered it often just means you've given them the confidence to be wherever they want. I never shouted at mine either. We have a great relationship, even though we're not physically close. Lucky we have the Internet, so anyone can be close. I even feel close to you!

I can remember my mother coming to the door and yelling my name out across the neighborhood for me to come in the house. But other mothers did that, too. Except, I was usually wanted for chores.

That is good. I have taken several courses on child raising and I think the best was Love and Logic. The last word is key here. You have used that with your children. I think it is much better to make them think that to yell. Oh, I have yelled but this makes so much more sense. It is easier on both of us too I think.

Wish I'd have thought about that. lol Mine loved to play the "We've been here the whole time" game. This is where they hide and pretend not to hear as you call them a good 20 times. Then you start using their full name and they come out talking about "What? We been here all along."

My younger two wouldn't understand. But I used that with the older kids. Or I would talk so soft that I was hard to hear... no matter what or whom I was speaking to. They had to listen harder. So if I "called" them and they missed out on something, I would point out that they hadn't listened when I had yelled so I tried something different.

Sometimes you have to turn things around and make them realize things on their own. My Mom could be really scary when she was angry so we all came running when she first called us

Seemingly, you yelling at your kids have helped them grow in a disciplined manner and now when they are adults they could realize the importance of you yelling at them. Hopefully, you proved a good mother for your children.

Raising kids is not easy, I know that. My son, when he was small was like a dynamo. More like the Tasmanian devil. Full of energy. My wife, now evil ex, used to yell and scream. Not good. I always took him aside when he got punished and I would talk with him. He always calmed down and understood what I was talking about. I find being attentive and explaining yourself to the child seems to work wonders.

@Rosekitty My mom was great at solving the listen or don't listen problem. When she wanted me to do something she asked me. A day later she would say well so I guess you have done so and so. If this was one of the times I wasn't listening and I hadn't done what she asked then I was some bucks shorter on my pocket money. She always knew how to hit me where it hurt the most but it got me to realize if I do listen and I am good to mom I also don't lose out on anything. In my teen years my mom and I would take turns cleaning the apartment and doing laundry. It would have never happened it mom hadn't made sure I realized that it was time to listen to mom.

I'm trying to remember whether I gave my mother problems or not when she called for me. Generally I was pretty good at responding. Of course if I was across town getting all bloodied up from my numerous bike wrecks it didn't matter how much she called. She always knew where I was from the explosions though (and occasional police sirens). I like fireworks.

@Rosekitty Not really, just a kid that loved fire. I took the 'don't play with matches' thing to heart though, and only bought lighters. The pharmacy kept the supply of Salt Peter stocked just for me. There was a lot of fun in those days before everyone got uptight.
