My great grandfather Alexander Ivanovich (1915-2010) was born before the October Revolution in 1917.
During World War 2 he reached Prague with soviet forces in1945 but was wounded and stayed at hospital till the Victory Day. His military service was commanding of mortar platoon. He got 2 orders of Red Banner for courage in battles in 1944.
After war he worked as a teacher of mathematics till the pension age.

My great-grandfather was born in Bethnal Green in London in 1830. He began life as a silk weaver but became a missionary in the slums of London's East End. When he contracted tuberculosis and was advised to take a vacation in the country, his mission sent him to Kent to minister to the Londoners there who worked as seasonal labourers picking hops. Whilst there, he founded the Hop-pickers' Mission and also a small penny-school for the local children. He found this work so rewarding that he stayed in this beautiful countryside permanently. The school flourished and became a boarding school for boys. My grandfather was born there and my father too. I and my brother were educated there for several years (though we both went to other schools as well).

My grandfather fought in the first world war. He survived the Battle of the Somme. He went on to look after the horses of the Guinness family and to sell potatoes. I think my great grandfather fought in the Crimea, the Eastern War 1853 - 56. I have no intention of fighting in any war and fortunately I'm now too old!
