My grandfather fought during World War I (1915-1918), my father fought during World War II. This photo is beautiful, I have one of my grandfather, the Italian uniform was not so nice.

My Grandfather was in World War I as a cook, World War II my uncle fought in. My father because of his polio could not go into the Service although he wanted to.

@LadyDuck It is amazing to think he was at the front all that time, was he injured at some point? Just think of the horrible things he must have seen.

@Marcyaz My father spent all the 5 years of World War II at the front, 500 miles from home. He was able to come back home soon after that the American troops freed Italy from Nazis.

My great-grandfather was born in Bethnal Green in London in 1830. He began life as a silk weaver but became a missionary in the slums of London's East End. When he contracted tuberculosis and was advised to take a vacation in the country, his mission sent him to Kent to minister to the Londoners there who worked as seasonal labourers picking hops. Whilst there, he founded the Hop-pickers' Mission and also a small penny-school for the local children. He found this work so rewarding that he stayed in this beautiful countryside permanently. The school flourished and became a boarding school for boys. My grandfather was born there and my father too. I and my brother were educated there for several years (though we both went to other schools as well).

I didn't have any grandparents who fought in any wars. I am sure I had cousins who did, though. That's a very nice photo of your great grandfather.

My grandfather fought in the first world war. He survived the Battle of the Somme. He went on to look after the horses of the Guinness family and to sell potatoes. I think my great grandfather fought in the Crimea, the Eastern War 1853 - 56. I have no intention of fighting in any war and fortunately I'm now too old!

Obviously he also had a family. Why don't you write a bit more about him? The photo was taken in the year when I was born.
