It would a very good thing for a child to become involved in. Apart from the obvious benefit of being able to defend their self if necessary, it would also teach them a decent outlook to life.

I went to Karate classes when I started to get bullied in case it became physical and I needed to know self defence...but luckily it wasn't necessary as I am not sure how well a "high kick" would have gone down in a "she started it" debate haha. I think it is really beneficial to a child's confidence, and also something that offers more social and healthy aspects. It can assist them with motivation and a routine and of course, if needed, gives them some defence tips. As long as you tell the child it's a leisurely activity, I think it is a great idea.

My 10 year old daughter is a first degree black belt in tae kwon do - and my 5 year old son is about to become junior black belt. We actually started because we heard so much about the Master at a particular studio - he was all about discipline and respect - not just towards martial arts, but to the people around you - parents, teachers, everyone. It has taught my kids to focus and be in routine - it's been good exercise for them 3 times a week! They know the moves and do spar, but self defense isn't really emphasized until later. It's more for the sport for now.

@swissheart In all honestly, to become a black belt only takes about 2-1/2 to 3 years. The first couple years is supposedly to teach them the form routines and to gain the mentality/discipline to do this stuff - then the "real" training starts when they get their black belt. I think everyone can reach the black belt level - but then there are different levels of black belt from then on - THAT takes many more years and practice!

I learned marital arts when I'm in college already. I think martial arts is a good way to boost a child's self confidence, discipline and of course social skills. A good martial arts teacher will teach his/her students that martial arts should not be used to bully others.
