What do you think about the "delete" facility on MyLot?

When you post a discussion you have the option of being able to delete any response that comes your way. I have never used this facility, and I am not aware that anyone has deleted any responses or comments that I have made on their posts.
I belong to another website that also has this facility, and I have fallen foul of one member who always deletes my comments, on any of her posts, whatever they might say - even when I am agreeing with her! She will leave any responses that have been made to my comments before she has had a chance to delete them, thus leaving the discussion looking very oddly one-sided!
What do you think about this facility? It is clearly open to misuse, so should it be there at all? Is its very existence an invitation to deny people their right to free speech?

Such features are always open to abuse, but could be more useful than harmful. It does give each member the ability to police their own articles and remove any abuse or spam etcetera that appears, which is far more efficient than depending purely on the Admin.

Removing spam is one thing, but removing dissenting views is something else. My view is that if you delete a comment you are depriving other people of the chance to agree or disagree with that comment, which is surely the whole point of a discussion site.

@Asylum It's a bit of a double edged sword, really :( but I think it's just silly if someone deletes all the comments they don't like because someone has a difference of opinion. -and I know quite a few people on these online sites who if given that opportunity, would abuse it, because I don't think they ever received the memo that says it's ok to agree to disagree. They seem to have this misguided opinion that theirs is the only view that matters and get very hot headed when challenged. It's very strange indeed, but I see those types abusing this function.
I like the delete button for removing all abusive comments, though.

I don't think it should be there but if you want to block someone from commenting like a spammer or someone very hateful, then that feature should be added. As for that woman, I'd unfollow her and not comment. She sounds a bit one-sided herself.

Yes, but I like reading the nonsense she writes and giving her a rise by writing comments! What she says about me is water off a duck's back as far as I am concerned, and I always find it amusing to read her responses to what I have written even though nobody is allowed to know what it was that she is complaining about!

I think this person is a bit odd. Can't this person block you if they don't like your responses or comments? I wonder. I would be a bit hurt at times and maybe even upset with this person. Fouls up their earnings too.

Well i have heard people who say they get offended by some comments they see and so maybe they can use the delete button to get rid of them.
Don't mind that she deletes your comments as long as you make them genuinely why worry

I think it is a good idea. There are times a person can leave a very rude comment and you just don't want to read it or have it on your post.

@indexer On other sites I had some rude comments toward me and other people who commented. I used the delete key to remove their comments. I think it is here for us to decide if we want to use it or not. I think the Admin will delete the post if they find it is not within the site's guideline.

I don't like it. If a response is offensive, I think it makes more sense to report it and let the admins decide if it should be deleted. Otherwise there is too much room for abuse. Really, on here, since we have the blocking feature, if you don't want somebody to visit your discussions, it makes more sense to use that.

@PhredWreck Alex might not like the extra work :-D But really if somebody's being an ahole, why not just report them and let him deal with it?

@bunnybon7 Oh wow, really?! So far i've had a couple of nasty incidents here, but that's it. I have heard from other friends on some of my other online sites that they too have been on the receiving end of some horrible behaviour. I honestly don't understand why people do it!

Any new featuree can be misused, but if used properly, it is a great feature. I have never deleted any responses or comments to any of my discussions, as what is the point? We are all trying to work together to earn, so deleteing others responses or comments, seems really mean. When I was here before mylot changed, I had started several discussions, and I went through them, and deleted the ones that are no longer valid, as none of the responses or comments counted towards to the new mylot.

@Susan2015 I haven't here either, and I hope I don't either. I always have nice comments so haven't had to worry about that so far.

@Susan2015 I think that now I know about this button, I would delete a comment levelled at me in a heartbeat, if I felt it was abusive or offensive!

There are plus and minus points there.Plus when someone is nasty or spamming and minus when even an opposing view is not liked.

I'm OK with the "delete" button. I'd rather it be there and don't have to use it than for it to not to be there at all. Here's my question. I'm not sure but what is bothersome to me is if when you take the time to make a comment and the comment is deleted, since this site pays you for interaction, wouldn't that be a sly way of cheating you! I mean how can earnings be calculated on nonexistent interactions. The proof of your contributions to the discussion disappeared with the use of a delete button that you had no control over. It's a thought.

@cmoneyspinner It won't effect earnings, the system records and remembers the activity. At least as I understand it.

@cmoneyspinner That's one of my concerns! If someone develops a dislike for you and becomes a bit too overzealous with the delete button, they are basically taking away from your earnings., and you can't do anything about it. I don't like it.

I never use the delete option. One of the options I use regularly is the Edit one. Sometimes I notice a mistake after submitting something.

I have used this button after someone blocked me (I didn't know I had been blocked until after the little quips started and I went to block them.) and then started leaving me disturbing little quips on my posts... Sometimes there is a good reason for such a button!

I actually like the delete option. While I am always up to free speech, spammers are not welcome so I have used it to delete replies/comments that have nothing to do with what I have posted as topic discussion. I don't mind comments that disagree with me and as a journalist, I've even received some hate and racist remarks. These reflect more on that person than myself and it actually tells me I've hit a nerve and made them think about the issue. It does sound rather odd though @indexer that someone would just delete any remark at all you would make. Very odd indeed.

Where are you getting the idea that there's a "right to free speech"? No matter where you say we get it from, I think it's trumped by the right to "The Pursuit of Happiness." If you think there would be more 'happiness' if you deleted a response that seemed to "destroy" some happiness, you have every right to get that response as far away from you as possible.

I'm not sure I like this facility, because it means you'll have a lot of petty people deleting comments left right and centre, creating weird dialogue all over the show. In all honesty, I think I'd prefer not to have it because if someone annoys you or you don't like them for whatever reason, you can also freeze them out and just ignore them LOL

You pose an interesting point. I never thought much of the delete option that is available on posts as I have never deleted a comment I did not agree with. I guess you can interpret this as a hindrance to freedom of speech, but is freedom of speech actually guaranteed in discussions? It's certainly something that is in the American Bill of Rights, but this is basically to safeguard the rights of citizens against government censorship of expressing something the the administration in charge deems undesirable. I don't know if this really applies to social sites. I get the feeling that you participate under the knowledge that whatever you say can be misunderstood, misconstrued, or interpreted in a way you do not intend, thus you really have little control over a comment once it's posted... by extension, getting your post deleted would just be another facet of that control that you have forfeited.
If others feel as you do, then they will allow the dissenting comments to remain, but if they are of a different mindset, they have the option to strike your words from their domain. Is this a good thing? Is this a bad thing? Maybe this lands more in a nietzschean realm and is simply beyond good or evil and just is.
