Extended Breastfeeding

As some of you know I still enjoy a breastfeeding relationship with my nearly two year old. I'm really proud of myself, especially as my GP tried to get me to give him formula to supplement at 8 weeks old (I pumped like a mad woman instead). On the whole I get a good reaction now from health professionals, once the shock wears off. But I got my first bad reaction the other day from my oral surgeon who wanted to know "why on Earth would you be doing that?". After a second of being gobsmacked I answered "why wouldn't I? You do know that WHO recommends breastfeeding to the age of two and beyond don't you? And I bet if I told you I was giving him cow's breastmilk you wouldn't bat an eyelid" I guess that as I'm going to allow the nearly two year decide when he wants to wean, and that there's no sign of it being any time soon, I'll be getting more and more of these comments. How do you feel about extended/natural term breastfeeding?

My daughter was still getting a feed that way every morning when she was 3. Things dried up after that.

I've a feeling we're still going to be going strong at three, it's his favourite way to wake up

I fed both my girls until they were two and then it just sort of tailed away naturally.

I don't think anyone has a right to dictate or demean how long a child nurses for. It is not up to those who scoff and scorn. It is up to the mother and child. Forget about everyone else!
