Can you be too friendly?

There's an over friendly chap at work. He's like an eager puppy that trips you up trying to get attention. You can't walk past him without being patted, or grabbed by the shoulder for a quick chat. If you stand still for a second, he moves in too close, grinning, and starts telling you about his breakfast, or what his plans are for the weekend. He calls me "young lady," though he's a good ten years younger than me. Sadly, this means I avoid him wherever possible. Do you know anyone like this? How do you deal with them?

@kizzyB Some people just don't observe normal social boundaries unfortunately. Avoidance is my usual tactic though I don't like using it.

@xFiacre glad I'm not the only avoider. It's not ideal, but I hate confrontations.

Yes, there are people like that in this world. Unfortunately, most of them seem to be attracted to me probably because I do not want to hurt their feelings and will not ignore them and walk away like most people do. I will take extra special care to pay attention to people that are mentally disabled that want to talk with me in the store or other public places, because they tend to be the ones that are treated the worst by other people.

Interesting that you associate the behaviour I described with someone mentally disabled. The chap I wrote about is a well qualified work colleague, married with two children.

@kizzyB No, I did not associate the behavior with someone mentally disabled ... well not in the way that you are implying. I said that I take extra special care to pay attention to the ones that are mentally disabled when they talk with me, but I did not say nor imply that they are the only ones that do this. Elderly people and children tend to do it quite often as well. It seems that the people that tend to be ignored by society in general are the ones that do it most often.

I'd tell him straight to back off and stop being so touchy-feely

Tell him you are busy and walk away real quick.
