Is this religious intolerance or should people in general be more sensitive where religious beliefs are concerned ...I have an open mind...please share your views ..
A group of people harassed an Australian couple at a restaurant here on Saturday, even threatening to skin the young man’s leg, for sporting the tattoo of Hindu goddess Yellamma on his shin. Their ordeal did not end

I guess now they will have to be more careful because one never can say , however the issue could have been sorted out peacefully.Indians are becoming very intolerant now regarding religious issues ! Of course there are many reasons for this ..

@LadyDuck I agree with that, I feel that while issuing a visa , all nations should give a pamphlet giving some information that would come in handy for tourists because many tourists are genuinely unaware of religious sentiments in the Asian countries ..

@kiran8 I agree that this issued could have been sorted peacefully, but tourists should understand that for some people the religion is a serious matter. It is just like young girls who wear bikinis everywhere they go in the world. Before visiting a country, it would be wise to know their traditions first.

There was no need for that. Some fanatics will go to extremes. It is better that such occasions are avoided.

Threatening to skin a person surely must be a crime.
This is barbaric thinking.
I hope those that persecute will get their just due.

Yes I agree , even a verbal threat should not be taken lightly ...The police have registered a case but the couple concerned wanted to settle it amicably , so I guess they have come to some mutual understanding with the police warning and noting down the names of the offenders .If they indulge in such things again they will be taken to task..

frightening that the police treat a threat to skin someone as trivial. The restaurant management were negligent in letting a diner be subjected to such hate crime intimidation

@kiran8 people should accept other religious believes... and even they are not following they should not kid others worshiping manners... but i think people should understand one thing that even though they differs in religion we were all get together in a group called human beings... just remember and we have to behave to be in one religion human and not get deep in to inter caste....

I think all religion have their own rituals and rites according to which they act....so people should be enough open minded to think about it and accept it....even I am too open minded...

I agree, we need to accept even if we don't agree. India is a multi religious society and there is no religion of the state which makes things complicated and leads to clashes between majority Hindus and minorities, mainly Muslims. Other minorities are in smaller numbers and peaceful.

Now with the net and media highlighting every little action that happens around them, it seems as if there is much more intolerance .But if we go through year by year account of such incidents it is not so, in fact during emergency we got to see the worst there was ...However, when such incidents take place they need to be checked in time !

@kiran8,Religion is a very sensitive matter. If I come across any foreigner tourist humiliating my religious beliefs,I would promptly vent my utter displeasure, but not molest them for if I do so,it would show my country,my culture and my religion in a bad light.

@else34 In a multi cultural society we cannot ban any food items ,although Beef has been banned in many states in India...I feel they need to have properly supervised outlets where people who eat beef and pork can buy without making others uncomfortable or even angry as the case may be!

@kiran8 Right. But haven't you seen what has been happening these days. They organize beef parties openly. Why?Because India is a democracy that grants its citizens freedom of speech. All this is going on in the name of freedom of speech. All this is going on only to tease Hindus. And when the victim objects, they are branded as communal. It is these people who had vigorously raised their voices in the support of terrorists who had killed some French editors when they drew a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad.

There is nothing more unprofessional than one harassing over his beliefs. We have our freedom to express ourselves. We can not also disregard the cultural upbringing of others. They might have been trained by their folks to look down on others just because they're different

I would agree with that, at the same time I feel that when we visit other countries we have to be careful not to hurt their sentiments like when you visit Saudi Arabia , no matter what your own religious beliefs are , you have to cover your head and not allowed to take any books or religious symbols belonging to any other religion except islam...One need not go that far but respecting others belief is good enough !

@Tita417 Yes true, I had this experience once when I traveled to Dammam, a small book of Bhagavad Geeta that I carried with me was taken and thrown into a dustbin , which was very disrespectful.I asked them if they could keep it somewhere so that I could collect it on my way back and the fellow did not even respond ..such intolerance !

I fail to understand both the sides. I cannot understand what was the need of engraving a tattoo of a Goddess on body. If that was so, what was the need to display it at a public place. And those who objected were just interested in watching a foreign couple closely and how come their gaze fixed on tattoo only? The crowd could have politely told the foreigners that it is not in order to get the tattoo of a Goddess engraved on body and they (the Australian couple) should do something about it.
This kind of intolerance by local people bring a bad name to the country at the cost of cheap publicity.

@dpk262006 Very true Deepak, The australian is a youngster who may not know the significance of the image which is understandable.Apparently one of the BJP workers went up to him and told him that the tattoo was that of a goddess and to display it on his leg was disrespectful and to cover it while going out in the public or else he might get into trouble. Just as he was talking to him a group of people came and saw the tattoo and were enraged and the BJP worker called the police before the incident turned ugly...Intolerance has always been there in our society with regard to religious sentiments

I believe that human beings have given way right to exist. Because of this, I maintain a philosophy that I must respect my fellowman's belief.

I am bit confused but I think both are right in their ways. The boy have tattoo must surely don't know what he has done wrong, But also saying sorry is also not a big deal if unknowingly also we have done anything wrong.
