Almost back to Square One

In September I attended an appointment at Withington hospital, which was to be appraised for cataract surgery. I had been waiting for some time to reach this stage and it looked as though I would finally end up with a date for the operation. Sadly that was not the case and I was referred to the Royal Eye Hospital due to a tear in my retina. After receiving an appointment date, today I attended the hospital. It is been decided to seal the tear with laser surgery first, which is scheduled for later this week. After the surgery I will be examined 2 weeks and 6 weeks later to ensure that everything is satisfactory. Assuming that everything is fine, I shall then be referred back to Withington hospital to undergo the assessment for cataract surgery. Once the date is agreed for that assessment, I shall finally be back at Square One and ready to start all over again. I have no problem with playing snakes and ladders, but I seem to be playing the game in a snake pit at present.

How frustrating for you. Is the retina tear just due to 'wear and tear', or did you damage it in some way?

@jaboUK The avatar has nothing to do with me. It just seems to pop up every Halloween.

I was told that it was probably due to an infection that I had in the past. However, I cannot see how it could remain unnoticed for 30 years.

I have had cataract surgery after my retina detached, was a horrible time but thankfully the surgery was pretty straight forward. Got most of my sight back. They can do some wonderful things. Good luck

I assume that the retina required re securing before they would attempt the cataract surgery.

@karen5416 According to what I was informed by the Doctor who operated on my retina, it should not be a painful procedure unless the cataract is well advanced.

@Asylum Yeah had to have the retina reattached plus was torn in 8 places. It was very scary

It's wonderful that they can do things like laser surgery for eyes these days. Once you finally get the cataracts done, you will be very happy with the result.

The whole concept of laser surgery seems illogical to me. I am well aware that it must be practical because we all know that it is common practice, but I fail to understand how a laser can be concentrated on the retina without cutting the eye that it passes through.

@Rollo1 It is quite obvious that it works, otherwise it would not be used. Nevertheless, I cannot mentally relate to a laser passing through the front of the eye to effectively weld the retina without actually cutting the eye when it enters.

@Asylum I know people who have had the laser surgery for vision correction. I must say I could never do it. I couldn't manage to feel confident with a laser pointed at my eye. But as far as I know, they never have any major complications with this kind of surgery. I assume the precision depth is all guided by computer.

It all sounds much quicker than out here tho'. I was on the waiting list for the cataract surgery to be done in September but never heard a word. They probably forgot to say it was Sept 2020.

I arrived back in England on 21st September and the appointment letter for the assessment had already arrived. Naturally the application pre dated that and was probably the start of September. After the laser surgery later this week I will have 2 returns to have the result checked, which will encompass another 6 weeks. At that time I will be referred back to Withington for the assessment again, which is sure to be 2016.

Sad to hear that you have complications that have stopped the cataract work. Hope you will go through this as time and tide waits for no man.

It seems like a lot of nonsense from the part of the specialist.

I am not expecting any problems, but it is becoming a long arduous process.
