The pleasure of walking.

On a recent holiday in Vienna I realised, to my dismay, that I could no longer walk as well as I supposed I could. I was fine around the house but that was not enough exercise because after ten minutes of sight seeing I found myself clutching my husband's arm to keep up with him. It was a nasty shock.
On my return I started a walking regime. Now I go around a track three times a week. The first time was an effort but it is becoming less so as time goes by. Today I went round the track twice and felt better for it.
As we grow older we get stiff and I am afraid that the saying 'if you don't use it you lose it' is true. I used to love to walk and I am determined to enjoy the pleasure for as long as I possibly can.

Walking is the nature's ideal exercise. I prefer walking for 1 hour at the speed of 8 km/ hr.

Walking is a good daily exercise for our bones especially when we are aging. To keep going, walking is the most suitable exercise because it is strenuous and makes our bone active. It;s not only the bones that are activated but the whole body systems as well.

I have some way to go to achieve your standards, but I will work on it.

Yes. Walking can be very pleasurable and rewarding too! We have a small lake around which there is a walkway. We walk around the lake often and enjoy it very much. But of course it is an effort to drag oneself out of bed everyday!

Are you working too hard so that getting up is so difficult?

Very true, you have to be consistent with your walking routine or else your joints tend to stiffen up. I go for a walk every evening and walk for an hour covering about 4 kilometers ...I take a break on Sundays since the place gets crowded ..

@41CombedaleRoad I am sure you will walk faster with time... The more we walk the more flexible our joints and limbs become ..

You really are a healthy walker and quite a fast one by the sound of it. I still limp a little so my walking is not as fast as I would like.

I heard recently that even if it is painful one should take a stick and go ahead and exercise regardless. Research has shown that it gives us five years more flexibility.

Walking is actually my favorite exercise. I think it's even better than going to the gym. I'm glad you enjoy it.

It is mine too, just being able to go the distance independent of anything else is liberating. I enjoy the fresh air too. Gyms hold no fascination for me.

I live in a very hilly area and that takes the pleasure out of walking, but since we discovered a racing track we have started walking again.

You have sounded the alarm. Will many or a few realize what you just posted? Those who hear the alarm and act on it will benefit.

I'm sorry to hear that, can you not go with a friend, or a large dog?

I know this is an old post but I must have missed it first time around. It's good to know you're now able to walk further than a while ago. As you say, if we don't use it we lose it.
