Guy Fawkes Day

Calling all in the UK, do you still celebrate Guy Fawkes Day? I can remember as a child here in my country the 5th of November was a most exiting day for us. My Dad used to buy my brother and me a box of assorted fireworks each and we would go down to the Foreshore in Cape Town just as it was getting dark. There we would join hundreds of kids letting off crackers and shooting rockets out to sea. On one occasion I had placed my box of fireworks on the ground to light a thunder flash when someone else's string of Lady Crackers were thrown too close and the next thing my whole box went up in a burst of crackers, rockets and Catherine Wheels. I had to run away for fear of being burnt. Needless to say I was devastated for the rest of the night!

It is still celebrated but has lost a lot of impetus over recent years. It is no longer to build bonfires here as was the common practice when I was a child. Back in those days everyone had a bonfire burning away outside of the rear door, although it resulted in major smog on 6th November. Nowadays there are usually official bonfires and firework displays organised by town or city councils and operated in open areas away from residential property.

@petertheo After writing this comment I was proven totally wrong. Despite bonfires being restricted to official venues only, there appear to have been more fireworks going off in my area than I have heard in previous years.

That's interesting. I had no idea it was celebrated in SA. I only found out yesterday that they celebrate in NZ so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.
