Donating Clothing

I have closets filled with clothing that needs to find new homes. As I'm going through everything in preparation to move, I keep finding all these clothes that I will never use again, and clothes from my mother and some from my husband. So I called a local charity and asked if they could come by and pick things up for me, and they are coming this week. It feels good to be able to give clothing to others in need, especially as we go into the colder months, when people should not be cold. While I do have some summer clothing to donate also, there are some wonderful things that people can wear in the winter.

There's no point hanging on to stuff you neither want nor need.

Yes, that's very true! Especially when you know that other people can use them!

@CRK109 I have a facebook friend who is volunteering at the Jungle Camp in Calais where the refugees trying to sneak into Britain live. She has posted photos of the absolutely RIDICULOUS clothes that people have 'donated' including a floor length green ballgown with diamanted bodice.

@boiboing you are right but sometimes it is so hard to part with things. I guess the people with the ball gown thought it was better than nothing. It does seem odd.

Where I lived before we once had someone heading to another state where our church had a homeless shelter. They brought a van and trailer and took clothes directly there. It was very freeing to send lots of good, useable clothes to people who needed them.

I donate my family clothing to the nearest charity center, twice a year. Sometimes, i even donate my child's shoes which is still in good condition. The center will distribute those items to the needy.

@ramapo17 Same here, especially those areas which always get flooded during year end. I always donate to the Salvation Army and other charity centers.

There are always people that need shoes and clothes. Especially in the winter months in the cold northern places.

It must be satisfying knowing that your clothes will be put to good use.

It is a very satisfying thing but the best was when I took all the food I had from my big stand up freezer down to the Outreach house where I use to do volunteer work. It felt good to know people would use all of it.

I also do that to the old and unused clothing we have. unfortunately for us, charities do not pick up donations but you have to go their office to donate which is bad for me because I cannot be away for long hours especially with the kids around.

I get regular calls from a diabetes support program to come and collect at my door. They accept clothing, housewares, furniture and more. They, in turn, re-sell all these items to raise money for their program. I think donating and helping any needy organization is a great thing... and it costs nothing but the time to gather up the items and prepare them for collection

We have been asked to provide shoes, towels and warm clothing for the immigrants moving through Greece. It is good to know that things that we do not require can be put to good use for others.

It's wonderful that someone else will benefit from them.

Great idea. I've done that last year before I moved--donated my old clothes and some of my mother's too, a few months after she passed away. All for a good cause for some deserving people who need it. I also donate books I've read from time to time, too.

There is a double benefit, isn't there? You feel good about cleaning out closets and someone somewhere is going to benefit too.
