Ornaments for Christmas

Chattanooga, Tennessee
November 11, 2015 7:04am CST
Last week at Children's Church, the kids made these ornaments with sugar, salt, and water. We brought them home and baked them for them, and taking them back tonight for them to paint and get ready to take home and give to their parents for their Christmas trees. They really enjoyed this. We are looking for more ideas for the kids to do for their home Christmas decorations, anybody have any ideas for me? I sure can use all the help I can get. Thanks .. love to all of you.

These little ornaments will turn out cute when they are all painted up. I however have no suggestions for you, I personally used to love to make popcorn strings for the tree with our son and then we'd put them out for the birds after we took the tree down.

@Juliaacv (1580) Julia, I think they would like to do this. Last year we cut Old Christmas cards that were saved, and made ornaments out of them, and they loved doing this and it was easy for them. Thanks.

I used to make ornaments for Christmas with a dough made with water salt and flour. It lasts for year and it can be easily painted. I still remember the proportions, two cups salt, two cups flour and one cup water.

@LadyDuck (10616), Anna I think that is the same one we used. My daughter mixed it for us. I remember one year we made some and put cinnamon in it so it smelled good and food coloring. I still have those and they were made years and years ago.

We have got a fairly young pine tree in the garden and this year it has some cones so I will cut a few, spray them with gold paint and hang them on the tree. Better than the plastic varieties I think.

When I did child care in my home we would string popcorn and make paper chains for the tree.

@tuttiharris You can make Santa and angels out of shapes. Just give the shapes to the kids and they will come up with really cute ones.

@jstory07 This sounds great also. They could even make an angel as a tree topper. My daughter did that also when she was young in school. Thank you.

@jstory07 (5853) We did the paper chains also, and I think I am going to use the idea of the popcorn this year also. Thank you Judy.

@kevinakash (407) Kevin, we are going to do that. We are even going to let them pick them out, one day we are going shopping at the dollar tree, where everything is a dollar and they have really cute things. Thank you, this is a very good idea... love to you my friend.

I am sure they would have enjoyed it, I think I would if I was given that task to do when I was younger :D

That is so nice because bothe the kids and the adults are involved in making ornaments for Christmas . It's what Christmas is all about - giving love to each and everyone by helping one another .

When I was a kid we got styrophone balls and took straight pins and stuck them through sequins and ribbon to make ornaments for trees. Very pretty. We also made shapes of snowmen, santas, angels etc... out of salt dough. Baked then painted.

@sherryeb (453), that is what we did, the salt dough. But for some reason they did not turn out that good. It might have been we had to transform them from our house to the church to bake because my stove went out. We explained to them last night hwat happened and we promised we would make another one this next week. thank you so much. I like your idea also that you told me about, I am going to hobby lobby to look for the styrophone balls this week.

This is such a good idea. I have a nice little 'envelope' which holds a few sweets or small items. I did a little slideshow of it for another site so I'll message you with the link.
