There is such a thing as a free lunch !

At least for me today, as I am doing a mystery shop later on this afternoon at a well known food outlet! I have to order a hot drink and some food, which will be paid for and I will earn £4.50 for doing the report on the shop. I am lucky that I have a free bus pass,so it will not cost me anything to get there and while I am in the town centre I will return some library books and pick up some reading glasses that are due for collection. Have you ever tried mystery shopping? If you have a digital camera or phone and live fairly near an urban area, this could be a way to earn extra cash. There are also sometimes phone or e mail assignments to do.

I have not done any mystery shops in a long while, but should get back to doing them.

I thought about it but decided I didn't want to do that much driving. I live 5 miles from anywhere and 30 from our nearest big town. But it would be fun.

That is good to hear. I think this gig is good for those who can write well, and very observant. Perhaps you will get such mystery shopping trips more often, and get to eat and drink free while getting paid.

This is true, though I don't want to have to eat rubbish!

I did it on a training course once at a leading high street store - interesting exercise

That sounds like the perfect way to spend the afternoon. I would definitely want to know more if I was still living in England. A visit to the library will round things off nicely although if you get involved here I doubt that you will find the time to read them!

I prefer grocery over restaurant shops, especially now that I have a "real" job and would have to work the shops into my schedule. I'm kind of kicking myself for not picking anything up this Saturday, since I'm only scheduled for a meeting. I could use a good stock up trip for groceries.

No, unfortunately in our small country we do not have mystery shopping in small areas.

I have done a few mystery shops over the years. Issues is I live in a rural area so they are far and few between each other. I would love more shops, and different ones. I tend to do the same ones over and over again every few months.

One company had a whole lot of e mail and live chat surveys as well as some phone ones, they didn't pay so much but there were lots of them for a while

@ricki_911 It is true that you can't rely on the income, but it has helped me a lot

I've never mystery shopped before but I did apply once. They didn't have anything in my area at the time.

There are probably several agencies. I am signed up to three and though I don't get work all the time it is fairly steady

@Auntylou I do live in a small town so that is probably the reason I didn't get any thing.

Yes, my daughter and I used to do Mystery Shopping here in our area. We LOVED doing the one for Bass Pro in Springfield. They would get so desperate for someone to do this that they would keep upping the price they would pay until someone would take it. (Sometimes we could get $45 just for that one store!)

Gosh, $45 sounds like good money. Was it really that awful?

Wow, I guess I'm really out of the loop. I'd heard of becoming a mystery shopper for years, but I assumed that these offers were not real and never looked into it. Now I'm intrigued! It sounds like fun. How did you get started?

My son's girlfriend was working for a survey agency and asked if I would like to try it. Then there is a website which gives all sorts of consumer advice which listed other agencies and gave info about user's experience, payment etc
