I Always Felt Safe in Paris

Today, France experienced the worst terrorist attack since World War II. It was their equivalent of 9/11. I am heart-broken for the country.
My husband and I have traveled to Paris several times. After the first visit, I felt that it was safer than most large American cities. Many times, my husband and I have strolled along the Seine ... shown in the photo.
Twenty-three years ago, we hosted an exchange student from France. After she returned home, we let our 14 year old daughter go stay with her and her family.
Sixteen years ago, we let another one of our daughters study in Switzerland for a few months when she was 14. She and her classmates spent a lot of time in France.
Fifteen years ago, we hosted another exchange student from France. Afterwards, we let our 17 year old daughter go stay with her.
Twelve years ago, that same daughter went back to France to take some summer-school classes while she was in college.
Honestly, I never thought twice about any of the times our daughters were in France by themselves, without any family members along. I always believed they were perfectly safe.
Today, that sense of safety was destroyed ... and that is exactly what the terrorists hoped to achieve.
I'm so sad.
UPDATE: One small ray of relief ... one of our former exchange students, who lives in Paris, contacted us to let us know that she and her family were not injured in the attacks, although they are very shaken by what happened. The other former exchange student lives in Dijon, so her family was not immediately affected by what happened, although they are saddened by the events, too.

We have always loved the time that we spent in France, and so have our daughters. One of them majored in French in college. I agree that it is a wonderful nation, and I am so sad about what has happened.

@amnabas -- The people who helped them should be arrested and tried. They have to be stopped.

I hope that these terrorists can be stopped. I know that they have also killed and injured innocent people in many countries.

such attacks could occur anywhere so no one should give in to fear of going anywhere - security is bound to tighten so it will get safe again

@DeborahDiane they will, and the terrorists will move on to other targets so we should all be cautious

My heart goes out to the victims, too. One of them was a girl who was going to a college about 30 miles from where I live. So sad!

When we visited Paris the last time, we took a trip to Germany. It is so easy to visit both countries in one trip.

I agree that these people, and all the ones who helped them in any way, should be punished swiftly and harshly.

Timing is everything. Lucky all are safe and none were still over there.

I feel very sorry for the people who were affected and their families, however.

So sad! This will not help the world become a safer place but only make it more dangerous.

I also made the same edit to my Facebook page. I, too, prayed for France.

I lived in Paris 1985/86 and have visited many times and always felt safe. In 85 there was a small bomb in a bookshop and having lived in Belfast in the 70s and 80s that was no big deal for me, but I was shocked that Paris was deserted for a few days after that. Now they've overtaken Belfast in the terror stakes.
