Pick of the Pops

United Kingdom
November 14, 2015 6:45am CST
At 1pm today and every Saturday, Tony Blackburn plays the chart hits of two different years from the 60's, 70's or 80's here in the UK on BBC Radio 2. This week it is from 1961 and 1976. Even though I could listen to the songs any time I like, I try to tune in to hear his 'picks'. Do you like listening to the golden oldies, or are do you prefer the modern stuff?

I like country music and cross-over music at the moment. I like a bunch of different types of music, so I tend to cycle around a bit. The youngest likes country music, and that seems to be the most appropriate for children at the moment, so I think that is where we are going to stay for a while.

@Orson_Kart Kacey Musgraves has a really nice voice. I heard her sing live, and she sounded great unlike some of the singers today who sound great in the recordings and like cats and dogs in heat when you hear them live. She has a couple good songs, too. I am really liking Maren Morris at the moment.

@purplealabaster Country music isn't that popular over here, but I do like Kacey Musgraves and we have some homegrown talent such as Ward Thomas and The Shires who are listenable. My dad was a big country fan and one of his favourites that has always stuck in my head was 'Get up offa the Floor Hannah, them hogs have gotta be fed' Great title!

You mean like Glenn Miller? In the Mood? I always am. Fancy a dance?

@bluesa The mind boggles at the thought of what a fancy dip might be? Sounds a bit saucy to me.

@Orson_Kart , yes, as in Glenn Miller, such beautiful music. I am always in the mood for a dance too . Absolutely, I would fancy a dance! And I would want a fancy dip to end the dance!

When I was young I loved listening to the oldies station but not so much anymore. In my 20s and 30s I've enjoyed the pop hits on the radio.

I still like some of the modern stuff but it's fun trying to remember where you were in your life when an oldie comes on the radio. Plus they don't write them like they used to. Who could forget such memorable lyrics as "Ooh eee, ooh ah ah, ting tang, walla walla, bing bang"?

@Orson_Kart Ha ha I loved that song. I was a teen in the 90s but loved music from the 60s and 70s and even 50s.

Yeah, great song and it did get revived more recently by The Cartoons. Here's one you probably haven't heard from an old British crooner. (In my next post as it screws up if I try to post in here.....grrrr)

I like most music ranging from Classic to right up to now. Tony Blackburn used to plug some great Music on his Show in the Mornings. I canĀ“t get him here so I go to youtube and here him on there. I love Spanish Music also and from other Countries it all depends. If I hear and like it then that is it.

He got sacked not long after I posted this. However, coincidentally, he is back today playing hits from the sixties.

I like the oldies as well, but for me, the oldies is the eighties and nineties.

I love music, much of all music from most genres, including the oldies and the modern!

Me too, but I do like listening to songs I haven't heard for a while. Here in the UK many stations play songs on repeat, so you hear them on loop again and again. Nice to hear a blast from the past.

I listen to much more retro music than contemporary material

Certainly the golden oldies for me. I rarely listen to the radio any more.

Older than the 60's? I have just listened to Charlie Drake singing "My boomerang won't come back". They don't make them like that any more. Thank God!
