How Do You Feel About Food Waste?

I hate waste of any kind, especially food waste and try to eat everything or re-cycle it in home made soup once it hasn't spoiled. I just discovered some bananas I had left in the hot press to ripen over a week ago, and forgot all about. They were all mushy and not very pleasant, so this annoyed me.
Do you throw out food?

@destry You can use them to make banana bread, the older they are the better the taste.

Because I grow all of my own food (very few exceptions, ie, sugar) I never waste any as I am the one who has gone through the effort of growing it, harvesting, killing, skinning etc.
When you put so much effort into food, you really know the value of what you eat!

Also you know that it has not been treated with chemicals.

I really hate wasting food of any kind. We have been truly hungry before so I try to make sure nothing gets wasted.

I throw almost nothing away, leftovers can be turned into soup. Greens and potatoes can be fried together to make Bubble and Squeak and aging cheese grated on spaghetti. If all else fails there is always a dog at the door or a cat at my feet.

I do discard unused food, but never in any real quantity. My pet hate is the waste by supermarkets here in England. All products are offered on sale during the last day of their "Sell by" date, but if not sold they are then thrown into the waste bins. They do not even allow the staff to take these home, which is outrageous.

@EugenesDDen Sadly this is true, but as we both know cheese will not be ruined the following day. These dates are a guideline and always set early as a precaution, so the concept of being fresh until midnight then suddenly change is absurd. England is not without hungry people who would welcome such food.

Yes, the trouble now is that no one wants to put themselves in a situation where there is the slightest risk of them being liable for any injury or illness. The "sell by" date isn't an "eat by" date and unless the products are meat based, they are likely to be perfectly safe for weeks if not months after the date. The problem is that even if the store displays a disclaimer denying responsibility, the terms of the disclaimer won't necessarily be guaranteed in a legal dispute.

I agree. I feel guilty wasting food when there are so many hungry. I know it's not going to make any difference to them, but food has a sort of "sacredness" about it that it's difficult to waste it.

The only food type items I waste, or rather throw away in a trash can, are chicken bones or animal byproducts that would harm my dog, otherwise all biodegradable items are put outside in the yard where birds or insects will eat it.
Really is too bad about the bones though, if not for my pup that would go out as well.

That's essentially what happens @EugenesDDen when biodegradables are put out into my yard both insects and birds help compost it, no need for fancy bins or what not, that's usually just a bunch of hype to get people to spend money on things nature provides if you're patient.

@rebelann I agree about the fancy bins, I just pile everything into a heap like in the photo and leave it for about a year. Then I use it in flower pots, planters, dig it into flower beds etc.

I do not like to wast food. But there is a bad habit in China,if the host treat someone a meal in restaurant, the host will order more dishes n food that all guests could not consume it seems the host hospitable if he order more. They left the hotel but not taking the rest food.

I normally don't throw out food unless they become inedible. I feel bad of wasting food when there are many people all over the world suffering from hunger. If we could find more and more ways to re-cycle food they can come in handy. maybe banana pudding?

I try not to throw away food. That´s why, every day in the morning, before I plan the menu of the day, I check what is left from the day before.

I try not waste food, but I do find myself not finishing some foods. If I don't finish the foods then next time I won't buy as much or in smaller portions.

No one wants to throw out food, but it happens. I'd rather throw something out than to eat it when it turns bad.
