Dancing - Past and Present.

The promenade in Spain.

There is dancing to a live band every night in our hotel in Spain. I used to love dancing, but now due to my husband's health problems we mostly just sit and watch. This is great entertainment and we love to listen to the music as well, but occasionally my husband will feel able to attempt a shuffle around the floor for one of the slow dances.(He's nearly 85). Once I was known as 'twinkle-toes', I did a great fandango, I'd twirl around and strike a pose, You should have seen my tango. The fellas would queue up for me, Yes, I could really dance, They liked that I was wild and free, All night we'd whirl and prance. Now for me the beaux don't scuffle, I have no men in thrall, With my love I dance a shuffle, He's proved the best of all. Do you/did you enjoy dancing? Original poem by Jabo. Photo is my own.

Love the poem, very original. And for me, I'd rather shuffle with the best guy in the world then prance around with anybody else. There is ALOT to be said for aging with the right person, isn't there?

Nice poem Janet, I am not a very good dancer, while my husband is, so I am never self confident when it's time to dance.

@LadyDuck If one half of a couple dances well they can usually 'carry' the not so good one. I expect you look pretty good when dancing with your husband.

@jaboUK Far from it. But I don't have the self confidence to dance. I have it for plenty of other things but not dancing.

That's sweet. I hope when I'm no longer as agile that I can still enjoy the music and dances and yes.... a shuffle or two.

@AdrienneJenkins I'm sure that you will still be able to enjoy the music when you are old Adrienne - that isn't age related. As for the dancing, it's only been just this last couple of years that my husband hasn't been able to dance much. Despite an artificial hip I could still do it.

Conservative would be an understatement in my bygone days. I loved dancing and simply enjoyed watching as we co8uld never dance unless we were married - our family rule. Once my bro in law a great dancer wanted to pick me up but I said that my first dance would be with my husband and waited for that day only to realise that my husband never danced. Till today I have not danced with another but have stolen the floor with the free style that is open for anyone wanting to shake a leg with or without a partner.

I actually took ballroom dancing many many years ago, I was in my early teens. I think it was my mother's idea - that and making me learn the accordion. Very nice poem!!

I didn't enjoy dancing when I was young, well, maybe I enjoyed it, but I was also self-conscious and therefore wasn't able to enjoy myself thoroughly. Once I hit twenty-six, most of my reserve left me and I was then able to shake a leg more freely, although I never did fancy dancing nor posing. I danced at wedding until a few years back when I hurt so much after one such night that I decided I'd better quit for a bit. Since my husband now sports a prosthetic, we don't do much of that anymore although he'd be able to do more than shuffle during slow dances, we've not gone to anything for many years to check our form these days.

@MarshaMusselman I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy dancing when you were young Marsha - my teenage years and early 20s were my best dancing days. I'm sure your husband would be able to dance perfectly well even with his prosthetic.

@jaboUK It nearly brings me to tears sometimes. We both loved dancing but Vince played drums in a dance band so we never got to dance much as I'd be home with the boys. We had few years where we'd go to dances and I always thought when we were older we'd do a lot more dancing but it has passed us by. It is one thing I really regret - that we didn't make more opportunities to dance.- not that we were any great shakes but I did enjoy it.

It's sad when you can no longer do something you enjoyed so much. I love to dance although I'm not very good at it. I did try ballroom dancing years ago with my boyfriend but the teacher wanted to appropriate my boyfriend for the competitive team! Some years later I started Ceroc, which is not too complicated and I used to really enjoy that. Nowadays we go to Ceilidhs which we all enjoy.

My mom and my late dad are/were in the age range just above your father. My dad loved to dance. He knew all the latest crazes and my mom had to learn them all to keep up with him. I wish I would have lived in that era, and all the ladies wore hats, well, everyone wore hats. But I was no slouch in the 70s, either!

@Pattitude Yes in our age group nearly everyone learned the proper dances. That used to be the go-to thing - the Saturday night dance, and what fun it was. I'm glad you enjoyed dancing too, but was that more the disco sort of thing?

@jaboUK Yes, disco was there, lol, I'll admit I did some of those dances, but others as well. I would have much preferred to live in other eras, with all the dancing, wearing hats. I always wanted to go to this local swing dance club, but never could get any of my friends interested!

@jabo Wow! You have put it all together so beautifully! I loved dancing too- - - all sorts. You name it and I could do it! I didn't need to learn any steps. At college socials, I was the hot favorite. Currently, my husband and I do dance [mostly slow!] once in a while when we get the chance. We love dining at restaurants where there is live music.
