oh, matron!

I was having a gander at the BBC news app earlier and came across an article about a very naughty teacher of little ones. Why was she naughty? Because she'd set them some homework. *gasp* But not just any old homework. This was a handwriting exercise which she'd copied and pasted from the internet. In her excitement at finding a valuable and most helpful resource, the teacher forgot to ensure it was appropriate for her six and seven year olds pupils. Oopsy. There was a swear word in it! Oh, matron! Well, wasn't she a silly numpty? The entire article went on about this one swear word, with some of the parents muttering that their children couldn't read it anyway. No harm done. Nothing to see here. Move along please. An un-newsworthy item, presumably intended to lighten the mood from all the Trump malarkey littering our devices. All I could think was what about the spellings! In her haste to be resourceful the teacher had failed to note not only the single swear word, but also the very American spellings. Favorite instead of favoUrite. Color in place of coloUr. If I were a parent I would be far more concerned that my child was learning incorrect spellings than the fact that they might be able to read a naughty word they probably hear a few times a day anyway. I would also be questioning why the teacher was copying and pasting activities from the internet instead of creating resources which are more appropriate to my child in terms of culture, style, language and spelling. That'll learn her, eh?

I can't help wincing at the non-standard spellings from the colonies.

Maybe she was trying to make a statement about under-resourced and over-worked teachers!
