The Secret Life of 4,5 and 6 year olds

This is the title of the most interesting and engaging programme I have watched this year.
Produced by Channel 4, part of a school has been taken over by the film crew and some child psychologists, with child high cameras and mikes catching children's first interactions.
There is a wide variety of children from all over the country and we see how they play with and sometimes exclude individuals.
One new 5 year old girl , kept out of the playhouse by a boy and girl pretending to be married, complete with baby doll, turns her back on the offending pair saying clearly "A curse upon that baby!", having clearly picked up the language of fairy tales.
Later she tells the couple that it is not their house, it is everyone's. And then says "That is not acceptable".
These programmes are such fun and if you can get them where you are, I would highly recommend you watch them.
With love, Aunty Lou

Kind of a strange name for the show though. Didn't know kids had secret lives.

The thing is that you get to see children interacting with each other away from adults. Once the kids get used to there being cameras around ( about 30 something indoors and out) the footage reveals normally unseen , so secret, behaviour.

I've seen some of this programme and there was one bit that stood out for me. They asked one 5 year old boy what one thing he would do to make the world better (or something along those lines). His response? "I don't know, I'm only 5". To me that displayed a far superior level of intelligence and self-awareness than most 5 year-olds!!

I have two of them fast going to reach that age. So ..my little friend who is just a month and a half away from 4, came to play with me. His mother strictly told me don't feed him. Agreed. So I was playing with his sister, and making her comfy in my computer chair and told this hero...go get yourself some biscuits from kitchen...without really reflecting on it, just as a way to keep him away from mischief till I started playing some songs for the little one. And oh boy he ran all the way to his place screaming mommy attha (that is what he calls me) is giving me biscuits..sigh...half an hour later, he goes into kitchen eats a couple and shyly smiles at me...after having ruined my relationship with his mom.

I was unsure whether to post this as it may not be available ,even via the net, to many mylotters. However I thought that it should be available in Europe and Ireland, and viewers in the UK who might not have heard of it might be glad to know

My sister too who works in an amazing school near Reading where the children have grazing sheep , fleeced every year and all ages making felt and things from that felt. They have apple trees, grow sunflowers and pumpkins and spend half the day outdoors. they teach the National Curriculum only 4 days out of the prescribed 5. staff never want to leave and there is an army of willing helpers raising money for the extra arts and music on the fifth day

@Auntylou I really enjoyed the teenagers. But I associate that age group now with "work". Watching shows with kids is like going back to when I was not yet retired. No, thanks.

@ElizabethWallace Teenagers are great when you get them on your side. But they can be exhausting. My middle school choir can be the best or most tiring class of the day.
I'm laughing about your "work" comment. There is a thing going around now about putting yourself to sleep by breathing in on seven beats, out on eight, etc. I tried it once and immediately my brain said, "Time for class!" because I do breathing exercises at the beginning of every music class.

I have not heard about this programme, but I'd definitely like to watch it. It's always joyful to see the children playing or working together, it's so much fun and I am always inspired by them as well. I have a 3yo and 6yo children, and I enjoy seeing them playing the whole day.

I love some of the psychological experiments done with kids over the years. It's always interesting to distill the learned behavior from what is purely natural.

My wife is a part time kindergarten teacher and we have a good laugh when she shares her experiences.
I can never cease to be amazed and amused by toddlers and children and how they react mostly innocently.I have been writing that what adults do and behave cast a pall of gloom, confuse, and then make them cynical eventually. And the cycle continues. We should break this negative chain for a better world - siva
