I have been so sleepy since Christmas. It is because of the turkey. Turkey contains an amino acid called tryptophan is said to make you sleepy. At least until now, now the researchers are saying it is a myth. It doesn't make you sleepy.
It always makes me sleepy so I don't care what the researchers say.

I would suggest that it is eating too much that makes us sleepy, the poor stomach has so much work to do that it puts the rest of the body to sleep.

@SIMPLYD I have proven it to myself and I am a professional researcher and I know all the data available on this subject researching and my masters degree in psychology, has led me to this conclusion. It was the standard theory for years because of the tryptophan

I expect it is the quantity of food and drink consumed that makes us lethargic after Xmas dinner rather than just the turkey

I really didn't eat all that much of it. Since my smaller stomach prevents me from eating too much.

yes if you eat anything too much it is not good for you. Because of my operation I did not eat that much at all.

@winterose I wish I could say that. Turkey is good for you but not if you eat too much of it.

Eating in general makes me sleepy. I would say turkey makes me relaxed. The side dishes tend to make me sleepy.

@winterose It works for me, but I read somewhere that tryptophan-rich foods work best on an empty stomach.

no turkeys but after each meal, I nod; I sleep. I say to my son and siblings that I am like a pig because I sleep after food intake.

I never noticed but we rarely cook a whole turkey. Being Greek, Turkey is not the first choice for holidays, lamb is. I will pay attention the next time we cook a turkey.

It doesn't affect everyone though, just some people are more sensitive than others.
