It was a tense atmosphere

If you occasionally watch films that are thrillers based in London you will be familiar with the sight of fog drifting around the streets just before the murderer strikes. People may be forgiven for thinking London is always swathed in fog but this is no longer the case, we have a little fog sometimes and mist in the morning but it is a damp country so that is not surprising. However I can remember when London really did suffer with fog. It was called 'smog' because it was a mixture of smoke and fog as a result of coal burning mainly I think. This fog was murderous in itself and elderly people died when the smog fell. I was schoolgirl then and we had to walk to school (no cars to speak of) whatever the weather. We had big knitted scarves which we wrapped around our faces so that we breathed in a kind of filtered air. It was so thick that we could not tell if we were walking on the pavement or the road. Happily there was a clean air act and fuel was cleaned up and my children have never experienced a smog. photo: courtesy Dreamtime

I have been where there was quite a bit of pollution, but none that was visible. Definitely smelly and unhealthy though.

Good to hear that what I once saw in films can't be seen in reality anymore. I have relatives in London and they can probably give the same testimony.

Maybe in the 1800's lol not now though, although saying that it was covered in fog a few weeks ago along with the rest of the country.

We also had fog in my native city Milan, then it almost disappeared, but now the bad smog is back.

It is great they were able to clean up the air. Now I hear it is bad like that in parts of China.

I am glad to hear that fog has been clearing up. With my arthritis I have trouble living in Canada who would be in pain 24 hours a day in England

I remember watching movies located in England and didn't like to see that fog, imagine living with the smog! Must have been terrible.

Sadly many modern cities still have the smog problem.

We never had smog up here in Newcastle, maybe because no one had cars till 1990 :-), when you look back at the older films such as Jack the Ripper, it was always foggy yet there wasn't many cars around? Maybe it was all of the industrialization

I can imagine this would have been very bad for people with respiratory problems.
