All I Want for Christmas Are My Two Front Teeth

I was a whiny little sister wanting to go everywhere with my much older brother. As he set off to go bike riding one day I started my usual campaign to be allowed to join him. I was about 4 and didn't have a bicycle; I had a tricycle. He gave in or, more likely, my mom made him take me. I expected him to ride his bike along slowly while I pedaled my tricycle. No, he did not. He took a rope about 10 metres long and tied it from his bicycle to my handlebars. He was a pretty smart guy. My brother started to pedal at a great speed along the sidewalk. (to me it felt fast anyway) I was already frightened before he came to the corner. He turned the corner and I approached the corner 10 metres later. At the corner the trike jerked out from under me and followed my brother's bicycle. I however kept going straight. I flew into the street and landed on my face. Home we went with me bloody, crying and minus some teeth. My mom phoned the dentist and he said to gather up the teeth and come in. He pushed the teeth back into my mouth and some of them settled in and stayed for years. My four upper front teeth didn't take though; well they might have but there was another accident; another day. Every Christmas I heard that song and I remember hating that song. This memory was triggered by Cahterine @bluesa at:
Yesterday was a holiday in South Africa, and my sister and I pottered around the townhouse, getting stuff done, being lazy, when we heard a commotion outside....

Poor little you! But they would have been milk teeth, so they would have grown back eventually. Did your brother get into trouble with your mom?

Yes, they grew in when I was 7 or whatever is the usual age to lose them. I can't remember the trouble he got in. I am guessing he did.

I lost more than 4. The dentist put them back in and some settled back into their place but the 4 front top ones didn't. So those 4 were missing for years, until it was the usual age that the permanent teeth grow in.

I was older when I fell on my face and broke a front tooth, so it was a permanent tooth and I remember the pain. The things we do as children without thinking through the consequences, huh? Lucky for you that you were young enough and that you were able to collect the teeth and save them.

I am glad that the dentist was able to put back some teeth in place, anyway you were only 4, so those were milk teeth, at least they grew back later.

Yes, they all grew back just fine later. I was just missing teeth a long time as they came back at the usual age.

I'm glad to hear that they weren't your adult teeth! That must have been pretty traumatic for you as a small child!

@paigea It's pretty amazing how our brains can choose to only remember the not-so-bad parts of past incidences!

@moffittjc yes, it was one of our classic family stories for the rest of our childhood and was always a funny tale and not a traumatic memory. maybe it was for the first week or so, but I am guessing it would have been; I don't remember that.

I do remember riding down the sidewalk and flying into the street. I don't remember the pain or much about the dentist visit or much about how I felt the next day. So, it seems it was quickly gotten over!

I used to go everywhere with my older brother also, in fact I couldn't cross the road unless he was with me and as there were no other children that lived near us he was the only one I had to play with. So I would play war and we would pretend shoot at cars that passed by.

@arthurchappell Unfortunately, I neglected going to the dentist for many many years. Now I have found out they are much gentler than I remember. They put topical freezing on before needles. They can give me Atavan if I want. But, I find it enough to have the gas. Getting work done is pretty okay. But my gums are in terrible shape due to all the neglect!

I love this story, not about you loosing your teeth but about the crazy things kids do. These days you would have to have a helmet on!!

I mainly remember the story as things we did as kids too. Would the helmet have saved my teeth? It would have needed a full cage like some hockey players wear! However my brother as an adult credits his bike helmet with saving him from a bad injury and my husband credits his ski helmet with saving him from a bad injury as well.

Ah yes--I was the baby brother brat--my brother had to take me places and take care of me--most of all he had to hear "Your older, you should know better" a thousand times!!! PS I have a scar over my left eyebrow--I say he purposely let me go in front of the swings--he insist it was an 'accident'!
