The first Poem

Budennovsk, Russian Federation
January 5, 2016 5:01am CST
The previous Poem was a challenge from @Jessicalynnt. It gave me impetus and i wrote one more. It took me a couple of hours. I like it. Son asks his father to tell him about Russia. "Daddy, Daddy, what is Russia? It's a country or a lake? Do you know at least one Russian? Answer questions that I make!" "Listen, son, I'll tell your ears, Hope you won't get any fears. Russia has the largest square, Many rivers, mountains, lakes, In the forest lives a bear, In the marshes live some snakes. Nine time zones the country covers, Lots of oil and gas in it, Many climate types discovers... Are you listening? Take a seat. Slavic tribes - in the beginning, Stalin, Putin - in the end, Tsars and monarchs - in the middle, Study History, my friend. Have you seen some books on shelves, Grandpa used to read a lot? Neither goblins, nor kind elves Live in pattern of the plot. Dostoevsky, War and Peace Teach philosophy and life. Mental power will increase, Books can help to find good wife. That is all for you, so far. Hope you've learnt something today. Now, my son, go to my car, Bring us ball for football play!"

This is great - very well done. I really enjoyed reading it, and as MALUSE says, it must be especially difficult when it's not your first language. Thanks @MALUSE for suggesting this, and bringing it to my attention. I'll suggest it to some of my friends as well - don't worry I can see who you've already sent it to, so nobody will get it twice.

@DaddyEvil If someone has already suggested it - it says 'sent' by their name. So it's impossible for someone to receive multiple suggestions for the same post.

Thank you for the suggestion, Janet! This was a very nice find! I do have a question for you, though. How do you know who Maluse already suggested this thread to? Never mind! I selected a few more people and suggested something for the fourth time in almost five months. I do hope all of them will like this, too!

I do hope you aren't suggesting we also write in a foreign language. I probably will find attempting a poem in English difficult enough. lol.

To describe the largest country in the world in 5 verses, 20 lines is quite a challenge. To do so in a language which is not your own and in a metre which immediately conjures up a melody which is quite definitely Russian in character (memories of the Red Army Ensemble and massed balalaikas here!), is nothing short of amazing! Congratulations! Pozdravleniya!

@TypicalRussian, First, my congratulations for a job well done. You are braver than me, I have yet to write a poem in English, my first language is French. I guess eventually I will take the plunge. Here is video to honor your country.
The National Anthem of the Russian Federation (Russian: ??????????????? ???? ?????????? ?????????, "Gosudarstvenny Gimn Rossiyskoy Federatsii") is the nation...

Brilliant, this is a great poem and many members should read it, because there is a lot to learn about Russia in only a few lines. Congratulations, it's very difficult to write a poem in a language different from our native language.

Great job for a second poem, and you have more info in this than I would even know about, I think. After reading, Owlwings comment below, I see that you did even better than I first supposed. I too enjoyed your meter, it was easy to read and enjoyable. I'll have to go look for the first one too. I think if more people gave poetry a shot they might find something they're better at than they think or will ever know if they never try it.
