I Need an Aardvark

My husband and I have just been watching a documentary about aardvark - well, he was watching and I stopped to have a quick look while passing through. I couldn't help thinking that's exactly what I need at the moment, a pet aardvark. The ant season here is worse than ever this summer. In previous years I've managed to control them with ant sand, but I'm not making much of an impression with that this year. At least they haven't come inside yet. So, in the absence of a useful pet such as an aardvark I shall continue my murderous ways, killing ants as fast as I can on a daily basis. And I don't feel guilty about killing these living creatures at all. I am not a fan of ants.

An aardvark would probably make an excellent pet because they are extremely gentle and friendly creatures that do not harm anyone under any circumstances. Hence the old saying "Aardvark never hurt anyone".

Ha, ha. I hadn't realised the existence of these poor wee creatures is threatened.

@Asylum I see that having a cataract removed hasn't removed your sense of humour too

I don't like ants when they come inside, I don't mind them outside.

My concern with them outide, other than removing them before they come inside. In the eleven years we've lived here they've only ever dared venture inside once.

And they come in droves. Ugh! I was just thinking that a person with a family of Aardvark could make a good amount of money this time of year. Start a service.

There's a future for you we don't actually have aardvark in NZ so my experience of them is limited to TV

@valmnz The bite and it burns when they do - they make giant ant hills, some a few feet wide and double that high.

I get scars from ant bites, and fire ants give me hives, so we have to have ant purges every so often

You're the second one to mention fire ants, I've never heard of them so will have to look them up.

@Jessicalynnt You got that right. I'm still trying to figure out how they managed to get inside a brand new jar of peanut butter. I hate fire ants.

My husband had an ant infestation at work and one of the bosses told him to get the Works Department to sort it up. So he phoned them up and asked them to send him an Aardvark

What do these ants do to people if they aren't so-called fire ants?

All they do to people is come inside if allowed and if you've ever had a moving black mass of ants inside you'd be killing them as fast as I am. Not pleasant at all.

@valmnz that is something you don't want to get into the house. homemade idea try liquid soap and water spray it all over. I have been told this works well at keeping them away.

I've had a couple wars with ants too! Diatomaceous earth can help, so can ant bait, and they also really hate cinnamon powder. Good luck with them.

I usually use ant sand or ant bait, the brand I use orks well. But, am temporarily out of ant sand and so I've been using vinegar in water, which does seem to be working so far.

I really hate seeing a moving mass of them. It is fascinating though, watching their busy long ant trail.

I buy "ant traps", they release a liquid that attract the ants, they feed the larvae and the larvae die. It's better than nothing, but a pet aardvark sounds interesting. I wounder which are the "side effects".

you are writing again? Now just as well Gary tagged me in this post otherwise I would not have know you were writing again. Do you want an Aardvark? Are the ANTS that bad? Go and look for the photographer Chad Cocking on FB - you will find that he has the most amazing stories about all African animals as well as the Aardvark. This is a photo of a mound of red sand that will be the home of the creature you are looking for. Heaps and Heaps all over our area.

You and me both @valmnz . Here in the southern US, we have Fire Ants and let me tell you when they bite, you know it. Their mounds are huge and it seems like you have to try different products yearly to kill them because they become immune to the product. And it is worse when they invade the house. I've had to throw cabinets of food out because those little buggers will infiltrate everything. One time I got into bed and was being bitten severely. When I turned on the light, the bed was full of them.
