How Time Passes

A few months ago, my husband and I packed up and moved to another house.
We have moved often (you'd think we liked moving) So we sort through our belongings regularly. It is an excellent way to eliminate a lot of unnecessary 'stuff' from your life.
There are some things that are hard to let go. These tiny slippers. They were purchased for our oldest grandson when he was one year old. He came twice a week while his mother went to work.
This young man is now sixteen, and none of my other grand babies is small enough to wear the slippers.
Now, because of lack of space, a photograph of the slippers will take their place to keep the memory alive.

Taking a picture takes much less room. Currently I am encouraging my father to go through his stuff. A two and a half story Victorian home....he has one bedroom in my house. Everything from that bedroom (my sewing room) has either had to be discarded or accommodated somewhere else in my small house.

My husband and I are ready to downsize and we have had to part with many sentimental piece of the past, much like your grandson's slippers. But we do have to remind ourselves that memories are portable and remain in our hearts forever. That is the only way that I was able to throw some things out and donate others. I still have all of the shoes that our now 26 year old wore from the time he was about 6 months old until he was about 3. And still in the original boxes. I do know how attached we can be, small shoes are really a symbol of how cute they were when they were that small.

@Morleyhunt Hopefully your daughter is wrong about that! I'd rather live out my days in my own home.

@Juliaacv If you stay fairly healthy, then maybe you can, but many of our parent's have had to move into nursing homes for more care. Even if you are able to stay in your own home, it's still a good idea to go through your stuff so your family doesn't have to do so later. It's a lot to manage especially if they all work or don't all live nearby.

We moved, seventeen years ago from a six bedroom home to a two bedroom with no basement. You learn to thin out.
My daughter says, eventually everything fits into one room in a nursing home.....

@Morleyhunt I am asking my husband to do the same. We have too many things, we cannot push the walls of the house to make it bigger.

If I had all of the cute things and the things that evoke memories I would need a much larger house. They had been in a box that was unopened for two years. I took a photo before I sent them to Goodwill.

I could bury myself under nostalgic souvenirs, but I also don't want to spend all day cleaning or moving boxes.

Right now I am going through lots of things in my parents house to prepare it for sale. They have thrown out very little in the last 50 plus years. Now, where am I supposed to keep all of this, assuming it was even possible.

@Morleyhunt I hope you can sort through all the items in your parents house. Older people have a tendency to hold on to things.

I have often heard that we can keep the memories but save the space by taking pictures. I would have a hard time parting with them myself.

I am content with a photograph. There are many other items I need to cull.

There are some things I keep just for sentimental value, such as a napkin ring I was given at my christening. I have a box for cards which are just so beautiful and lovingly given that I keep them too.

There is no way to incorporate them into a throw pillow or afghan? It's a shame to have such a thing thrown away.

A photo. I don't have room for more stuff. As it is my walk in closet...well...lets just say, you can't walk into it any longer.

It's so hard to part with those tiny remembrances of our little babies (children or grandchildren).

A picture is the best way to keep memories alive. It gives a nostalgic feeling!

I keep a lot of things like that and then end up with way too much stuff! Moving is a good way todown size.

Maybe the child's parent would have liked them as a momento perhaps, but at least you thought to take a picture of them first. I've moved a lot in my lifetime too, but now we've been in the same house for fourteen years, the longest I've lived anywhere since moving out on my own when I was nineteen. Moving can be a way to keep things simple. We've collected a few more things now that we've been here a while, but many of our extras are things we need for our business. I have one box of baby clothes to give either of my daughters when they have their first one. Other than that, we pretty much get rid of clothing we've outgrown or don't wear any longer.

I can imagine how hard it would be to throw these out. They are very cute.
