Wake up and smell the bacon.

I have been inspired to write about bacon or rather the smell of it after reading a post by @Raelove she had posted an article about bacon which is worth a read and rate and of course your opinion on it too!
There are some things in life that are just infectious and invoke happiness in many people and that is the smell of bacon cooking. Imagine lying in bed and someone starts cooking bacon the aroma coming from the kitchen and wafting its way through the house to you slumbering in your bedroom will instantly wake you.
Whilst visiting a friend one day quite early in the morning he was about to make some bacon sandwiches for breakfast. Where he lives a lot of joggers run past his house. He told me that when the joggers run past his house he tends to make bacon sandwiches and turns the extractor fan on in the kitchen so that the smell of the bacon cooking wafts outside. Teasing and tantalising those joggers which I thought was terribly funny but cruel.
Can you imagine going out for a jog and being hit by the smell of bacon cooking. I wonder if it makes joggers run faster to get home to cook a bacon sandwich for themselves.
There is something very special about the smell and taste of bacon. Although we rarely eat bacon in our house the smell of it cooking certainly sets the taste buds racing.
When we have bacon sandwiches they are absolutely delicious with tomato ketchup and it is practically a sin not to have it this way.
I do not like it cremated like they make it in the states but I like it browned but still soft inside. I can not eat bacon when I go to the states as it is far too crispy and seems to have taken on a completely different taste.
How do you like your bacon cooked? Do you find bacon sandwiches irresistible too?

@garymarsh6 Now wait a minute. I thought you were a purest. With your ketchup you seem to get it right, but use tomatoes not ketchup on your sandwich and experience the delight in a more pure form.

There is just something about bacon... and it so suits a fresh Irish soda farl, even if the one pictured below does not exactly resemble the soda farl commonly sold around here...

OMG goodness that looks delicious! Proper bacon of course, dry cured not the chemicalised water filled stuff that comes out of Denmark.

@ElizabethWallace Carefully? Actually, there have been burgers I've been served in the US that need a knife and fork to safely, and without mishap, tackle...

Yours sounds like my favorite BLT. Lots of crispy bacon, fresh tomatoes from the garden , lettuce, mayo, salt and pepper on toasted white bread, cut into triangles. Yum Oh, and a cold Pepsi and Lay's potato chips!

I remember back when I was first introduced to the microwave and how happy I was to learn I could cook bacon in one. I used to be a fanatic for making things a head and then freezing them. I had several bacon strips in the freezer. Yum!

I have only cooked it once in the microwave and did not care for the taste of it. I think I missed the smell of it cooking in the sizzling pan!

@garymarsh6 I just thought one favourite bacon of mine used to be sold in Marks and Spencers and it was Canadian bacon. It was dry cured and I think it had maple syrup on it. It was really delicious and tasty.

@garymarsh6 I tried it that way too. Almost no flavor at all and so not worth the disappointment.

I wondered what you would think knowing you are vegetarian. Do you eat egg?

@garymarsh6 No, I am not a veggie because I eat fish. So eggs are on my list of things I eat but not so often.

Exactly. Which is why we usually sneak a little bacon into our meatless lives.

I almost forgot . ..another way I love bacon: fry some bacon, stir in chopped red potatoes, carrots , and onion, fry in skillet until browned and crispy! Yum PS Can you believe all these discussions about bacon?!!!

Yes, I can. It is universally loved (except for the odd man/woman out here and there). I wonder what makes it so heavenly.

@Raelove We have Canadian bacon here too, but use it mostly as a topping on pizzas. It shrivels and becomes crispy.

To me, the very best way to enjoy crispy bacon is in the summer when we have lots of fresh tomatoes from the garden for a BLT!

It must be an American thing. The others here do not feel our passion for the BLT. They smother their bacon with ketsup or gooey eggs. Sad.

I was born in the USA, so I love it crisp, in a tortilla with mayo, lettuce and tomato...my favorite.

@ElizabethWallace I use the tortilla like a wrap, put everything in the middle, fold up the bottom, roll it up and you have a BLT Wrap.

I love the smell and taste of bacon, but prefer it the way it is made in the USA ~ cooked and crisp. My husband and I gag at undercooked bacon when in Europe. As much as we love bacon, and Europe for that matter, we have it very infrequently. It is so unhealthy.

@ElizabethWallace I have only tried fries in London with the fish and chips thing. Not my cup of tea, pardon the pun. I only know that anything from a pig should be well cooked.

@DianneN True. They fry their potatoes, let them sit for awhile, then fry them again. By doing so, the oil soaks into the potatoes. Ick. Some places in the U.S. do this too, won't eat them

They seem to like their food softer and greasier than we do. Have you ever tried French fries there? No thanks.I like them crisp and fairly dry.

Of course the smell of bacon in the UK and bacon in the US are quite different. I have to say, the US is even more hypnotic.

@garymarsh6 A deeply satisfying aroma indeed, but I'm content to leave it at that because the taste tends to linger and repeat on me all day.

Cremated? I don't eat it cremated. I like it cooked enough to be crispy, but not burnt. That just makes it hard and nasty. I no longer keep bacon in the house, but know there is a little deli nearby that makes terrific bacon (BLT) sandwiches.

@paigea Anything burnt is disgusting. I cannot believe that people order good "blackened". That is just gourmet speak for burnt. Oh, and a huge carcinogen.
