Booking my next Incredible India trip

Apologies that I've rather been missing in action the last few hours whilst I tried to get my head around booking our holiday for later in the year. Actually, when I say later, it's about another 285 days (give or take a few) so MUCH later in the year. We are off to India again. We go almost every year and I always book early but this year I've booked super-crazy-early. My husband has been allocated holiday at just about the most expensive time of the year to travel to India - a week before and a week after Diwali. Last year we went 4 weeks earlier and it was a breeze to get good deals but this year I can see that the only way the prices can be going is up. So I've grabbed and booked. I had been researching the international flights for several weeks before cracking and spending more than I wanted to for flights with Virgin Atlantic. They were at least £100 less than any other direct flights per person and I could see I wasn't going to do much better unless I went via somewhere really stupid. Internal flights were easier - so I've grabbed three with Jet Airways and one with Air India. Luckily the AI is the final internal flight and has a much better luggage allowance than Jet which could come in handy IF the urge to shop should hit us in the second week of our trip. It's a lot to pay out upfront so far in advance but in the long run, I'm pretty sure I've done the best I could. So now it's time for me to catch up on that long list of notifications that popped up whilst I was having fun with my bookings.

@boiboing Now you've given me another hankering for getting back to India. There's no way I could sit long enough to take a direct flight though so I'd definitely have to go via somewhere stupid. Maybe someday.

Some of the Middle Eastern airlines are supposed to be very good these days - not like when it was Gulf Air or nobody. We used to call them 'Gulp Air' - there were terrible.

@boiboing last time I came back with Syrian Arab Airlines - that'll not be happening again any time soon, but it was an excellent outfit.

@xFiacre I once flew Balkan Bulgarian to Africa. Thankfully they don't exist any more. They were terrible.

Hope you have gotten a good price. Nice that you get to go to India as you do. I have never traveled out off the continent. Well, I guess I have too because we went to the San Juan Islands one year.

I paid more than I wanted to but less than I feared so all in all I'm pretty happy.

What a glorious holiday for you! I wouldn't like the long plane rides and all a person has to do to get on that plane but otherwise, wow! India must have fascinating ancient buildings and sights. Congrats.

With a direct flights, it's between 8 and 9 hours. That doesn't seem too bad.

@boiboing I hope you have more seat room than what I typically find when I fly a few hours from one place in the US to another. I sit in one of those for about 3 hours and come out needing to stretch a very achy back.

Paying in advance makes it seem less expensive when the time comes to take off. We are hoping to go on a tour of India this fall.

@boiboing Only the bigger cities. Where do you go? It's so far from the USA, so once there, we will tour all the highlights.

I have never been to India {never even left Europe, me} but I have it as a destination on my 'to-do' list. Exciting!

It pays to book in advance sometimes but it can still be difficult to get good deals.

Last year I didn't start booking until May/June when we had to cancel our trip to Nepal and start over because of the earthquake. That wasn't a problem as we were very early and the main season hadn't started so we still had lots of choice. But this year it's like trying to go over Christmas - all of India will be on the move for the holidays.

Sounds good When I went to cuba for a few months I used dial a flight and they got me flights over £400 cheaper than I could find. It was via Amsterdam but that was fine for me. I don't mind going around the houses as long as i get a decent savings and the stopovers aren't too long.

If I don't have a complicated itinerary on arrival then I am willing to take a risk on a cut price ticket.
