Why El Paso Is Left Out When People Think of Texas

I get the biggest laughs when I read what people say in reference to Texas. Somehow if there's a flood or tornados or whatnot in Texas they simply lump us all together and assume ALL of Texas is being ravaged by bad weather. I thought I'd add a screen shot of a map of Texas to give those of you who may not know a glimpse of just how different my teeny corner is from the east end. Can you tell just how far El Paso is from those big cities of Dallas, Houston or San Antonio? Usually that's where all the bad weather is, here it's mostly hot and dry.

We use to have that LP record and my father would play it like crazy in our old National stereo, I can't find it perhaps it would fetch a price on ebay lol!

Gee, thanks. I got so fed up with this singer, he'd come here and all the ladies, mom included, went bonkers and would want to go see him, ma never did. I had no interest.

Thank you for the map, I did not knew where was your city. I read in another discussion a few months ago that Texas was 900 miles wide. Let's say that you are living at about 700 miles from Houston ?

You are welcome. Yeah, 700 is a good guess. I think we're about 700 from Dallas as well.

I've read that Texas was once an independent Republic, never really done some research, just heard that some people wanted to secede after the last economic down turn

I've read a little about that. There was a lot of turmoil due to Spain and France, they were at war at the time and both wanted to control Mexico, Texas and other regions but I'm not that well educated about those times.

@topffer great history, it's the first time I've heard that the French somehow were involved in Mexico, thanks a lot, now I'm inclined to do more reading, Acapulco was a sister city of Manila for about 300 years and my knowledge seemed to have stopped there, shame on me, oh yes I've read the war with Texas, I made more readings after watching " Texas rising" on one of the cable channels.

Both Maximillian and Napoleon Bonaparte were over here during some kind of war that was going on @louievill I didn't read as much about them because at the time I was much more interested in what happened to the druids when the Romans invaded the UK.

Texas is huge, far bigger than the whole of England. I expect you get fed up with people only knowing about El Paso because of that song. So what else has it got going for it?

I think it depends on where you are. I personally like that we're close to New Mexico which has a lot of interesting things to see like White Sands. It's just over 100 miles north of here so the drive isn't that long to get there. There's Gila Hot Springs in New Mexico which I've never been to and I don't think it's that far from here, certainly closer than Dallas.

@rebelann Right - I wanna go there! Crazyhorselady lives somewhere in New Mexico too. What about proper Mexico? I see you are right on the border, so have you ever been there?

I've only been in Juarez @jaboUK but that was years before the cartel started killing people over there. Mom used to get gas, soda and leather purses and stuff like that over there.

LOL! I usually do lump all of Texas together, Ann! I usually think of it like I do most other states. None of the other states are even close to as big as Texas is and so weather going through, say, Missouri usually (but not always) hits the whole state. Most of the time, if the weather doesn't hit our entire state, then the part here that doesn't get the weather is north of I-44! I live 12 miles south of I-44, of course! LOL! In general, the only state I can think of that doesn't share most of it's weather is California...

Yeah, CA also has a diverse weather pattern and if I'm not mistaken so does Alaska, although I tend to think of the latter as a freezing cold state even in summer

@rebelann Yeah, I think of Alaska as freezing cold even though I've seen some of the giant vegetables they grow during their shorter summers up there! LOL!

Texas is our largest state so the weather is bound to different. We do tend to get it wrong though.

I don't know a whole lot about AZ but that the southern part is much like here, hot and dry until you get to Yuma I think @RubyHawk I've heard that even Phoenix gets humid anymore.

Hey @rebelann! Like most of the others, I mainly associate El Paso with that Marty Robbins song. I think it's great to have a song named after your city. I know you are sick of hearing it, but I love it. It has some fantastic lyrics. I particularly like "I caught a good one, it looked like it could run" haha. Musical genius! What I didn't know, because I've never looked, is where it is, and yes, you are way out on a limb from the other big cities that we all know about. I think it must be cool to live there (grass is always greener you know) I hope you do love it there.

Awww thank you. I do love it here it's the closest thing to a hometown that I've ever known, Army brat here. Actually the grass is actually greener once you get past this desert area. Still, it has a beauty all it's own that is hard to see if you're not really looking.

We passed through El Paso when we went from Santa Fe to San Antonio, I know very well how far it is from San Antonio, a little more than 550 miles, it took 8 hours driving.

That sounds just about right. I've been through San Antonio back in 1963 or 1964, there were no interstates back then.

Yes it is It was a cool song at first but they played it way too much here, I got really sick of it. I think that happens with most songs that it played so much that you never want to hear it again.

Oh yeah @Ceerios I remember those dust storms that were tailed by rain, it happened mostly in East El Paso all we got in Northeast El Paso were the dust storms ..... you brought back memories of sand storms I'd forgotten about but now I recall walking home from school with the wind and sand at my back and boy did that stuff sting the back of my legs.

@rebelann - Let me think a moment - I was on my first trip to El Paso on my new job for a company in the nuclear medical business, so it must have been in1966. I had rented a Chevy Corvair car and it was clean and shiny - until it rained mudballs all over it. Must have been a lot of dust in the air when the rain hit.

If I were younger I'd move to NM as well, but I've already invested 18 years here so I'll just have to be content to visit .... I know, what was I thinking, right?
