On our vacation to Turkey this past November, we visited Canakkale, located on the south coast of the Dardanelles.
Like Istanbul, it is a province in which you can be in Asia or Europe. This was Asia, and no passports or visas were needed. We crossed by ferry and had this lovely view.
To the left, which you can't see, is the Trojan horse used in the movie, Troy, with Brad Pitt. We recognized it immediately.

I didn't realize that area of the world was that lovely. I've never known anyone from the USA that visited Turkey before unless they traveled that way for work.
You're the second person here that's talked about vacationing in Turkey. I wondered previously why anyone would want to go there, I didn't realize there was a coastal area nearby. See what I don't know?

@MALUSE You are correct in that. In fact, it wasn't until Janet began sharing about her trips to Spain that I realized that was a well-visited area for tourism too. My daughter has friends that moved their whole family here from Spain, but still go back to visit as their parents and other family members are still there. I've read about Turkey and how they embraced Judaism in their early days, but nothing much about the country itself or what's there for tourism.
I know many service men and women from the states go to Germany for tours of duty, and I know some if it's basic history, but nothing about your country itself either. Maybe if I didn't work so many hours, I'd read more about these things online.

Lol! My husband's brother first told us about it years ago, and my son's inlaws went to Istanbul and Cappadocia. A friend went to Istanbul and said it was the best place ever! So now I am recommending it, but not until their neighbors to the east settle down.

@MarshaMusselman Turkey is a 99% Muslim country now. I have always been interested in geography, different cultures, traditions, food, and customs of people and places around the world. Traveling, reading, and our online friends make this a very interesting world. Our neighbors here in Florida are from Finland.

Turkey would be interesting to visit...however, I think I would rather go to Greece. Although the country I really want to visit is Italy.

What a beautiful view for you and the Trojan Horse..how very interesting Dianne.
It must have been breathtaking.
The only vacation I have ever had in my life was at Tahoe and that was a nice view from the hotel.

Turkey is one country I really want to visit. That is interesting that you didn't need a passport or visa.

My mother had a fear of flying, too. After getting meds from the doctor, she flew on a family vacation to St. Marteen. She flew home without meds, after enjoying it so much. She wanted to fly to Paris next, but unfortunately, she passed away 4 months later.

It is another beautiful area of Turkey. You know I loved my whole trip to Turkey. Did they take you around the battle fields of Gallipoli before you took the ferry over to Canakkale? We stayed just outside in a wonderful lodge type place that was right by the waters edge. Non of the waiters spoke English but the hotel was owned by an English woman and boy did they work hard. Lovely photos DianneN

Yes, we visited Gallipoli, too, and it was touching, as well as a refresher history lesson. None of the waiters and few of the hotel staff spoke English in most of Turkey! Our guide spoke perfect English and had such a command of the language. He was hysterically funny every day, as well as bright. Glad you enjoyed your lodge. Our condo is on the water in Florida, so I know what you mean. This is a view from my bedroom window at sunset.

It was well below your parallel line and a bit lower than ours, so it was pretty mild, especially in southern Turkey. I am always freezing if it is anywhere under 70F, so often wore a light jacket in the mornings or evenings. Of course, it is always cooler on the water, especially on a boat. Thank you. We saw no rain at all!
