Being an RN in a Geriatric-Psychiatric unit. Oh, man!!!! There is no more brutal job than this!!! the tension resulted in permanent pain in my back, which disappeared only when I quit.

Being in the medical field is never easy simply because you will witness all kinds of unkind situations people are in. Some you won't be able to help at all and that has to be the hardest part for any RN.

It depends what you mean by hard. There's physically hard, and then there's mentally stressful. I thought teaching high school students was hard, because of the amount of hostility and rudeness we have to defuse. Then one summer I thought I would earn a little extra money working 3-hr shifts in the kitchen of a nursing home. They had me in the dishroom, and I had to get the supper trays of all the residents through the dishwasher before the kitchen closed for the night. That was was physically hard, and I only lasted a month before I quit. Next to that, teaching was easy.
