Although one would think that the DONKEY reigns supreme in Botswana, the ZEBRA lays claim to the title of NATIONAL ANIMAL of Botswana. My hubby says that is why they have the white and black stripe in the middle of their Blue flag - makes sense!! So what is your countries National Animal? - Enlighten us!

In Canada the Beaver is on top. It was chosen because when the country was first explored, trapping and hunting was important and many wore the pelts of the beaver. Now it's a pest because humans don't want their streams dammed up so it is still trapped and used for pelts. There is a movement to de thrown the beaver and replace it with the bear, but I doubt that will ever happen.

The beaver does seem like an odd choice, doesn't it? Has anyone suggested the moose? I like the bear idea, too -- maybe the spirit bear (a white bear that's only seen in some place in BC -- impressive, but that wouldn't work for a national animal).

@Sheilamarie78 I like the Beaver but the moose would be good too. Although they are being found in the north east states, don't know if they are in the west US.

The Swiss national animal is the bear, it is so popular that Lindt for Easter sells "Easter bears", instead of Easter bunnies. Italy has two national animals, the eagle and the wolf.

Our national animal is the red kangaroo. We have the grey one in our area - the reds are in the north and interior. It isn't as pretty as our little greys.

I'm not sure but I think it must be the British bulldog. It has a reputation for locking its jaws on the prey and not letting go under any circumstances. Perhaps that is a characteristic of the British?

Have you seen them already on your trip? Our national bird is the Kiwi, no national animals as until Europeans came to NZ there were no land mammals other than a bat.

Our national animal is one that is not indiginous to England - the lion. I think it came about because of Richard who was referred to a 'lionheart'.

I love to see zebras. Canada's national animal is the beaver. I think that's kind of a silly choice. The USA claims the bald eagle.

Our National Animal is Tiger. Tiger was chosen as the National animal of India due to its grace, strength, agility and enormous power. It is also called "The King of Jungle(forest)" Photo by Jessica Weiller (Unsplash)

The eagle is our national emblem, but each state has its own bird, animal, flower, and tree, as well as state mottos and official songs, and some states have other "state things", like gemstones and minerals and such.
