Do You Have a Garage?

United States

When I was house hunting a few years ago one of the biggest selling features for my house was that it has a garage. The garage is connected to the house and I can just bring the car into the garage and come into the house. Where I was living before we only had street parking and it was miserable. Trying to find a parking space wasn't always easy so when this house had an attached garage it rated high on my "must have" list. I think about how easy it is now to just pull into the garage and I know I always have a place to park when I come home. It's also great not having to worry about ice on my windshield or snow covering the car and having to clean it off when we have nasty winter weather. Makes we wonder...do you have a garage? do you keep your car in it?

Having an attached garage is important to me for security reasons. When women live alone, especially when they start to get up there in years, they need this feature. I have it and love it. I know people who are jealous, and for good reason. Some people in my neighborhood do not use theirs for their cars. They have too much junk. It's absurd.

I fail to see why people hoard things in their garages to the point where they cannot park their vehicles in it.

@Juliaacv Miserable people hoard because they are trying to fill that hole inside that you and I do not have. So sad.

We live in an apartment so don't have a garage or a carport. When we finally do move into a house, a garage is a must have for us.

@Marilynda1225 I can only imagine. Even growing up, we always had either a garage or a carport to park the cars. It just all depends on where your grew up.

@simone10 I never had a garage until I moved here and it's wonderful. I can't believe how many years I had to park my car on the street

@bluesa A carport is probably just as good as having a garage. At least you don't have to worry about your car being in any bad weather

We have a two car garage, but need a three car one. Actually a four car garage. Our younger son has his own home with a garage, but stores his antique car in ours. I keep my sports car garaged. Our SUV and other car have their own parking area in the driveway. I don't have to worry about snow anymore, now that we are in FL.

@DianneN if I was in Flordia for the winter I probably wouldn't think so much about my garage LOL but with our bad winters here in Pa I listen to my neighbors cleaning off their cars in the mornings before heading off to work. It's also convenient for me to just bring the groceries in the house when I shop and I don't have to lug them all from the street. What kind of antique car does your son have? did he restore it?

We have an attached two and a half car garage. Our last home had a nice long driveway, but no garage, and neither of us liked that. So when we found this home, it had an attached carport, and we eventually had a contractor finish it into a full garage, the roof and the cement floor were already there. I wouldn't own a home without this much garage space. he still has a large shed for the riding lawn mower and the bigger things he uses in the yard, the wheelbarrow, snow blower, weed wacker and whatnot. He has a long workbench in the garage and I have a work station for potting plants.

@Marilynda1225 We've plenty of room for the 2 vehicles, and one side we have a large table for my pots and there is room underneath it for a stack of about about ten bags of dirt. We have two banks of lower cabinets across the end and the pantry from when we removed our old kitchen cabinets. Its a nice set up, and very spacious.

@juliaacv you were smart to convert that carport into a garage. Sounds like it's pretty big

Yes, like you our garage is attached to the house. It's only a single car garage though and when we had two cars mine was the one that sat outside!

There are necessities when we buy a home: Acres, pool, workshop, ranch over basement and main level garage. I don't understand how some people have a garage an park outside...makes no sense.

@abbygreenhill I notice that some of my neighbors have so much stuff in their garage that they wouldn't be able to fit a rake in there let alone a car. Sounds like a waste to me

@Marilynda1225 I would bet if we didn't have a basement or a 40 x 40 workshop then the garage would be full of stuff.

In my previous house we had a garage but here I do not but have ample parking in front of my house and with very creative parking I can get 8 cars on my driveway!

@Marilynda1225 No it is not a big drive but if we have a lot of guests visiting then we move cars so the last person to leave is parked nearer the house whereas the first to leave will either be in the middle so they can drive off. So I have three down either side and two in the middle! It takes a bit of organising but it is worth it in the end!

We have a detached garage and car port. Unfortunately, the garage is mainly storage, so not cars are parked in it. Right now my father in law's truck is in the car port(so my husband can use it when we have snow), otherwise I would be parking my van there.

We have a small barn. We don't put our cars in there but we do put our boat in there, to protect if from water freezing inside it. The cars can take the cold freezing weather better than our boat can.

@fishtiger58 storing the boat sounds like a good idea cause you don't want anything to happen to that if the weather is below freezing.

It is really convenient to have a garage of your own. Some people are having the hard time to find one. We have a garage since our house is typically designed as like American style.

There is a garage here but it is communal not private. That's the difference between private residence and apt/condo/townhouse.
