It's Nice Of You To Comment, But Please Respond Too.

You wouldn't go to a party and not greet the host, would you?
Metaphorically speaking, that's what I've noticed a few people doing on this site. They comment on someone else's response, then leave without actually responding to the post themselves.
I understand why it happens - they see a comment which strikes a chord with them, so jump in with what they have to say. That's fine, but it would be nice if they would respond to the post as well. Perhaps they forget.
I know that some people object to others having conversations between themselves on their posts, but I have absolutely no problem with that. Even if they are off topic those conversations can be entertaining.
But come on people, respond to the posts you visit - that will help their stats, while a comment on someone else's response does not. I don't know if it makes any difference to earnings whether you respond or comment, but it will make a difference to the response figures on that post.

I can honestly say there have been a few times when I had nothing to say regarding the discussion but had a lot to say about some of the comments..it happens - tongue biting time

@jaboUK I'm not usually one to avoid saying things, but I was put thru the wringer a few times here early on so I try to walk softly.

@AbbyGreenhill I know what you mean - it's easy to tread on someone's toes without realising it.

Great photos for starters. I don't know if I do this or not. I've never taken any notice. I don't think I can do as I go to a post, read it and almost always respond. I don't always go further down reading the comments and I'm sure I miss a lot of great stuff this way. I don't mind people getting in a corner at my place and having their own conversation either.

@JudyEv I'm pleased that, like me, you don't mind the conversations on your post. I usually check some of the comments before I submit my own, just in case I''d be repeating what someone else has said, then I send my own before exploring further.

People get in a hurry and they just don't think. I may respond and then like several responses around me that I read. Not often but I do that occasionally. We do have our way of doing things but what you have stated here makes sense. I will surely always try to do just that.

I agree that often it is a case of people being in a rush and not watching what they are doing.

@celticeagle Liking and commenting on other's responses is good, and should be encouraged, but it's nice to respond to the OP as well.

@jaboUK I think you are probably correct. We can all be in a hurry sometimes--or just not thinking

@amadeo I gather you haven't noticed this? Sometimes I get a notification that someone has commented on a response on my post, and I go and read it, then look for a comment that they have left for me, and it's non-existent.
Glad you like my begonias, thanks.

Does the writer of the original post get some (financial) reward when people go crazy on one of the discussions that emerges on their post? I've always assumed so, but I honestly don't know. I like it when people respond directly to my posts (and I always try to comment back), but I also enjoy it when a big discussion emerges from one of the comments.

@TheHorse Well you'd benefit if any of the comments are addressed to you - in other words - if you take part in the conversation.
Obviously I'm not sure about this as Admin won't tell us exactly who gets paid for what, but I'm going on what JJ says. He's been here forever in different guises, and he says that they are not going to pay two people for the same comment..
Lol- good of you to provide the drinks!

@TheHorse I would have thought that the original poster would benefit if a discussion takes off, but like you I'm not sure. It might be that just the person they are directly replying to is the beneficiary. Whatever - it's great when it happens, whoever's post it is.

Guilty. I don't mean to be rude. I just get involved reading the other replies and sometimes wind up commenting those. I think most of my replies are responses though.

@Namelesss I understand how it can happen Elaine, don't worry. I just thought it might make a talking point for a post, as people may not realise that they are doing this. I judge how well a post is doing by the number of responses, but that may not be everybody's criteria.

I'm not sure why anyone should be bothered if people are having a conversation on their post. it shows that it struck up a conversation :-)

@jillybean1222 I'm not saying that people are bothered - as you say it's great to get action on our posts in whatever form. But if people respond to the poster it helps their stats and they get higher up in the top and hot lists, and that can bring them more attention as they are more visible.
