One of the main differences between Western diet and Asian diet is the oil used. For us Asian, we use vegetable oil for cooking. There are many types of vegetable oils selling in the supermarket. We have palm oil, soya bean oil, rice bran oil, olive oil, corn oil, canola oil, sunflower oil and others. I normally buy olive oil, especially the extra virgin olive oil. We do not deep fried chicken wings at home, and extra virgin olive oil is good for soup. I buy rice bran oil after getting a sample a few months back. Rice bran oil is good for stir fried, even deep fried. Western diet does not use as much vegetable oil, especially in cooking. Many people use butter instead of vegetable oil when they want to cook meat. I think when oil is used in cooking, and in daily consumption, it is best to stick to vegetable oils.

Not sure on the rice bran, but we in my part of the West have every one of the oils you mentioned. Just about every house hold in my state has vegetable oil. Butter is only used for certain foods as is olive oil. You can't just lump the whole West together since we are many different countries with different cultures and traditions.

Olive oil makes an excellent skin and hair treatment with essential oils added. I think it smells bad when being cooked with though, especially with meat.

Olive oil works great on steaks and other meats cooked this way. We do use a lot of that here.

It seems that today the butter is not often used in cooking, especially for families. I guess the westerners like to use olive oil. Here there are many kinds of oils, but it seems that in my family we like to use the peanut oil because it smells well. And there is an oil called tea seeds oil. This is a new kind of oil and it is very healthy but quite expensive, too.

In the Western diet more and more Olive oil is being used. You generalize too much so your discussions aren't sound when you try to show something. I don't remember the last time I used plain vegetable oil for cooking.

More people use olive oil for salad, but not for cooking meat. I doubt if you use vegetable oil for steak or chicken. It is a fact that westerners do not generally use vegetable oil in cooking. Definitely not for fish, steak or chicken. For Asians, it is a given that some form of vegetable oil will be used.

I think indian foods are very high in calories and fat because the amount of oil I see in my indian take away meals.

I use mostly olive oil. Canola oil is popular here too, and cheaper since they grow canola in Japan (and eat it as a vegetable too).

True, rice bran oil and olive oil are quite expensive compared to canola oil.
