Help yourself eat the right things

Apparently the way we store food in our homes can affect our eating patterns. Removing all food except fruit , from surfaces in the kitchen reduces temptation. So no biscuits , bread , cake, cereal or the like must be visible. Next, take vegetables out of the veg boxes in your fridge and put them at the front, where you see them straight away. Store the more fattening foods in the veg boxes. Sometimes out of sight does mean out of mind. Worth a try do you think?

Wouldn't hurt. We have bananas and apples on the kitchen counter but right beside it are the cookies and other sweets. I don't partake in those sweets too much, my sweets are in the fridge! In all seriousness, "out of sight, out of mind" is a good rule to live by.

@Orson_Kart Honestly I put them in the fridge in hopes that others will eat some of them. They often forget that they are there, whereas I remember a little too often.

I usually do not buy tempting food, I keep carrots and celery sticks ready to eat in the refrigerator and I always have apples, my favorite fruit.

I thought the veg boxes served a specific purpose? i.e. they kept the veg fresh. I am not sure of the science behind it, but that's what they are there for. Plus I couldn't fit all my chocolate in them anyway.

That crossed my mind as well, I don't think it really matters much as there does not seem to be a separate temperature gauge in our "crisp" drawer.

@Orson_Kart and ScribbledAdNauseum I did wonder about this too. Not sure if it is because they are all shapes and sizes and therefore need a big box ?

I have no problem eating fruit and veg as I love them. It is avoiding the sweetened things that I find hard

Anything is worth a try. And don't buy it if you would rather not eat it - referring to biscuits, cakes, etc.

This is pretty neat. I never thought of doing this to help trick yourself into eating healthier. I can't wait to rearrange my own fridge in the morning

I do find that I'll go for the most convenient things, as I'm sure a lot of people do, when I want a snack. My fruit is always on the side in full view at easy to reach level. Sweet treats are in a low cupboard. I wouldn't put anything other than fruit and veg in my fridge's salad bix because everything has to be in a particular place in my fridge! saying that, I don't really have anything unhealthy in there except for butter which is only used for the boys' sandwiches.

The best thing is not to have too much of the sweet treats on tap

I have a nice pretty fruit bowl on my kitchen counter filled with a variety of fruits. It looks pretty and is a reminder to pick a fruit to eat rather than go into the cupboard for cookies

As long as I can keep my steak, Brie cheese, sourdough bread, and single malt Scotch whiskey, it's fine with me.

@Missmwngi I am munching on a bowl of chocolate cheerios from the nestle company. Perhaps not the most healthy thing to be eating. Easy to prepare though.

Sounds like a good idea. I can understand bout the vegetables. When we store them in the drawer at the bottom of the fridg, we forget they are there.

The problem is that when the meat is out of sight, and out of mind, you may have the temptation to buy more when you go grocery shopping. After that when you start to find place for storage, you will dig out all the old stocks of meat.

I think that meat should be visible in the fridge as it needs careful handling. It is more the sorts of snack food should be sidelined and the healthy to the front

True, that should work. I know I've been surprised more than once by what I've found in my fridge or the back of my cupboard.

I agree. Seeing great food on the table increases temptation. But weight has never been an issue for me till date. This is a great tip for a healthy lifestyle.

Out of site just means that I have to look harder to find the good stuff. It's a sound theory, but I'd fail in the willpower department for sure.
