Do you consider swearing as offensive or bad?

Why? We all know its not considered as a good practice to swear with bad words.
Today I had a talk with my friend about this. He is kind of cool with swears and do them frequently. I dont like it when he does that and said him not do this.
But today he asked me why is it considered offensive? Why is it considered bad in our society? I couldnt answer him. I dont know how to explain it. Its more like a feeling, right?
What do you think? How can I answer him?

I don't think that swearing is ever necessary and that when someone resorts to swearing then they have lost the point of a conversation. They could have used other more accepted words ro get their point across surely?

I swear like a trooper! but, I do watch my P & Qs when am with the sensitive.
For me if the choice was between swearing like a trooper to vent your anger.. or punch someone on the face..
I'll take swearing any days.

Swearing in writing is fine but too much of it annoys me greatly. I don't like hearing swear words. And how to explain to your friend why you find it so offensive. why don't you give them the meaning of those words and then explain to them why they are offensive.

Yeah the environment we were bought up does play a great role in this. If this is practice is common among the households they will have an increased probability in copying them.
I think I have never been familiar with this. So its kind of frustrating for me to hear it.

There really isn't anything wrong (exactly) with swearing... Some people use it as emphasis to what they are saying and mean nothing else by it.... Some people use it for shock value and don't mean anything else by it... Once in a while you find someone who does mean something when they swear...
You might tell him that while it is okay for him to use swear words when he is with people who have no problem with them, you find them offensive and would prefer he not say them around you. (Don't say something like: Don't say them or I will quit being your friend! I would drop you like a hot potato if you dared me like that and I know many others would, too.)
Asking him to make an effort in your presence isn't being too pushy or demanding on the friendship. It would be seen as being courteous towards you.
I hope that helps!

@aju007 A Someone beat me to that suggestion, didn't they? I should really read what everyone else says on these, but I don't want what they say to taint my thoughts and therefore the way I word something.
If it is not in my own words, then I feel like it is not my actual untainted thoughts.
Well, as long as it is taken care of in a way you find satisfactory, then I have no more to say about it.
You are welcome. Maybe I can help you another time.

I hope someone comes up with a good answer as I find it hard to give a reason. If in the company of older people, many would find it offensive and disrespectful so that in itself is good reason not to swear in front of older people.

Personally, I don't really care if someone swears unless they are calling me a bad name / word. Because then that literally is them trying to offend me.
But otherwise I don't care. Unless it's a child, then that just doesn't seem right.

@aju007 That's fair enough. Not everyone likes to hear swear words.
