Holidaying At Home

I know its great to get away from your home country and experience new cultures or just relax! However I have, in the past overlooked some amazing adventures to be had at home! Living in Ireland, I am a stones-throw away from some ancient and awe inspiring structures but never seem to visit them because I live so close! I think this year I am going to make a bucket list of all the things I want to do at home before I travel on holidays abroad! First on my list is The Giants Causeway! Do you live near any amazing holiday/cultural experiences?

What is The Giants Causeway? Where is Stonehenge, anyway? I've always been curious about that.

If you search 'giants causeway' I have a discussion about it. It's in northern Ireland and Stonehenge is in England (Wiltshire I think).

@JudyEv I may do that. I thought Stonehenge was in England, but I wasn't sure.

We call this a 'staycation'. When we have visitors we take to tourist attractions that we haven't been to ourselves and are often pleasantly surprised. We went to the Giant's Causeway and were very impressed. While you're in the area go to Carrick-a-Rede bridge too. Another nice spot.

@RaineyR There were a few people there were wouldn't go across but were sitting waiting for the rest of their party. It was worth the trauma though wasn't it?

Carrick-a-Rede bridge is still one of the scariest things I have ever done! I decided to visit on a sunny day, however it was immensely windy down by the coast and I was terrified! I don't think I stayed on the island too long! The views are beautiful on a clear day though!

I do not live near any major or well known attraction. We are a day trip away from several interesting things. I have known many people who neglected adventuring nearby because of the glamour of a foreign trip.

You are right..there is a sense of adventure going further afield for a vacation. There are certainly some amazing places to see on our door step too.

Manchester is pretty central in the UK - our traditional holiday haunt is of course Blackpool

I have not visited many places of interest in India including the Taj Mahal. I hope to do so within the next few years - siva

My hometown ooty is a famous hill station and it was the summer capital of India during the British Rule. I'm proud of my native place.

There is so much truth in what you are saying. I cannot say I have not done that. We have travelled to a few places in India before venturing out.

I think when we live so close to things like that we tend to take them for granted. While everyone else travels miles to see it, we see glimpses of it every day and really can't be bothered to look up close. I live about 30 minutes (give or take, depending on which roads you take to get there) away from where Daniel Boone's parents are buried. About a half hour away (I'm uncertain on the time) is where he is said to have hiden away.

It's easy to overlook your home delights. We lived in France for a year and made a point of visiting the sights. Consequently we know Paris far better than we do London, which is only 70 miles away.

@raineyr There's nothing can beat Donegal. That's all the excitement I get these days apart from the odd trip to Lisbon. (No, not Lisburn, I said Lisbon).

@RaineyR There's nothing like swimming at those beaches first think in the morning. So clean and invigorating.

I like Donegal too! It has one of the top 10 voted beaches in the world (for the scenery obviously not the weather lol)! Would love to see Lisbon some day too!

@xFiacre I think I would need to wait until July/August to brave the waters! At that we may also need a heatwave lol!

I would like to visit Italy one of these days. My family came from there and I just want to see where they used to live. Have a nice day.
