Forty year’s experience

Forty year’s experience It wasn’t until the other day when I was replying to a comment that I’ve had over forty years of experience and I’m only 51! Of course I’m talking about knitting. I know many had said in the comments, did you knit that, the answer is YES. I’m a very experienced knitter with over forty years of knitting. I love complicated designs and love Aran work with cables they are my main love. In my teens I was much into fashion and if fact I did one fashion show showing off my work. It wasn’t national fashion show, just locally in Nottingham where I lived back in the 80’s. I guess people often wonder because I'm a guy and guys don’t knit, it’s not really heard of. Well this one does and I do enjoy seeing something new coming together. I really have to thank my late mum and grandma for me loving the art of knitting. Do you have many years of experience at something?

Years ago, it seemed there were quite a few sailors who knitted. We heard the story of one guy who learnt to knit while on a boat and started on a scarf. But he didn't know how to cast off so by the time he got into port he had a very long garment!

I have bee crocheting for 50 years, as I started at the age of 18, and I am not 68. I bought learn how books, and taught myself how to crochet.I took to it right away, and have been making things ever since. The only knitting I do is on a loom, as I am not good at kneedle knittting. I use to needle knit years ago, but jut never kept up with it. I do prefer crocheting better though, as I can crochet faster, than I can loom knit.

@kevin1877uk That is a start. You have to know how to chain to even crochet, as that is how it starts and continues from there. I think another reason I like crocheting, is that I don't have to worry abouy losing stitches, as I always did a lot when I needle knitted.

I think the fact you are a man and knit makes it even more awesome. I love seeing what you create! I wish you lived nearby to teach me. I want to learn but never muster up the ambition to do it from the YouTube videos. I want to. And a pair of slippers for myself. That has been my goal for years but I just don't get enough time and when I have time I'm here at mylot ha ha.

@kevin1877uk I do not think there is anywhere nearby that offers classes. Buying the yarn and the shop offering classes to learn remimds me of books by Debbie Macomber.

I'm the same I don't have much time for Mylot these days. Shame you don't live close to me. Is there anywhere local to you that could show you how to knit? I knit when I was over there in California there was a little yarn store and the lady did classes for people wanting to learn. Over here in the UK, I know a store does have a group on Tuesday's to learn people how to knit. Just take you time and I'm sure you would learn, it really is easy, I guess it getting over those first few times, All the best with it.

Both my older and younger sister knit. My mom and grandmother did too. I tried to learn but not my cup of tea. My two sisters have been knitting longer than you have as they are a bit older than you. My sister just knit a beautiful 12 foot scarf in 2 days for her granddaughter, she wanted a DR. WHO, scarf.

@fishtiger58 Your tension comes with time, all the people I've shown out to knit have been tight in tension to start with but over time it becomes better.

gender issues have been quite silly at times. i see nothing wrong with a guy knitting or sewing. Cooking is OK as a shared pastime, why not the other homely arts?

I don't see why a man should not knit. You do beautiful things. This photo here: sounds like a very complicated design.

That headband is cute. You've got skills!! I've been trying to knit for eons and just can't pick it up. Seems like 40 years, I've been trying to learn. This inspires me to pick up the spindles and try, try again.

I would say I have years of experience identifying plants and doing research. I will not claim to grow things well, but I grew up in homes full of plants and I have a great deal of curiosity so at the very least I put my two years of Latin and my detective skills to work from time to time to learn about plants.

Cool, I know very little about plants which is sad because when I come to taking photos I've no idea what it is I'm taking most of the time.

That's really wonderful! I don't know back in those days, but now I have seen many male knitters online, and the reason I started to learn knitting is I want to teach my son to knit. I think I have about 4 year experience in knitting, when my son was about 3 years old. My son just turned 7, and he started to knit something very simple now. I always think it's good to kids, even adults to learn how to make things with our hand. I can't recall if I have many years experience of anything, I only started to learn making things in these recent few years after I became a mother. Perhaps chatting? I like to chat since I was very young. Just curious, do you crochet as well?

Wow, that one is a nice one . I can wear that on my head as something like a controller of the hair from coming into my head while putting on my make-up . I think i don't have any talent or habit that is useful and have been doing it for that long though .

Knitting is not a "gender" related endeavor, to my notion. In fact, knitting has been recommended to many men as a way to relax and has been especially taken up by several "sports" figures in the US, I understand. Knitting is a SKILL and with 40 years experience, I would imagine that you are VERY good at it. I like to embroider. I learned that at a child, so I do have over 40 years experience at that. I'm doing more of it, now that I have retired from another (almost) 40 year skill of selling jewelry. I don't MAKE the jewelry, but was a very successful sales person, earning a nice paycheck and many FREE trips and other incentives over the years.
