Fancy a lift?

Much as I dislike using lifts, (elavators) I took one this morning from the sixth floor down to ground level, thanks to a dodgy knee. My companions were a mum and dad with toddler daughter, while their little dude of around seven years old chose, with dad's permission, to run down the stairs. The entire way down, mum said how worried she was that her son would fall, they would arrive not knowing which floor junior lay injured. He would be trying to beat them, and would drop his iPad and break it. Having wound herself up a treat, mum was surprised to arrive at ground level to be met by a grinning son, proud of his effort. Dad patted junior on the head while mum and daughter walked away. Son then dropped his iPad. I couldn't help wondering how much the toddler had absorbed, and if she'd ever dare run downstairs. You don't need to verbalize each and every thought that runs through your head.

Some people - and it seems to be Mums in particular - seem to have no sense. They seem intent on making their kids too frightened to do anything.

@JudyEv I think it's a real shame. Yes, you want your kids to be safe, but they need to explore. I always tried to say, " Have fun," rather than, " Be careful!" Mine have both made it to adulthood!

@kizzyB I read somewhere once of a Mum saying 'yes' to things unless there was a reason to say 'no'.

I am sure she will eventually want to run down the stairs herself. Whether she observed and absorbed that today or not. My question is : If the mother was so worried about the son dropping his ipad, why didn't she take it from him before he ran off to the stairs?

Perhaps the woman wanted an attention from somebody. I don't usually say things if I am in public. There are some things that needed to kept and not to be tactless.

@Shavkat I think you're right that she wanted some attention. Sadly people who worry like that can be their own worst enemy, imagining all sorts of dangers.
