Generally, I am a shy person. I do not easily mingle with people around me especially if it is my first encounter with them. What I usually do is I just observe them: from how they talk and how they interact and use their space. By just doing it, I can tell to myself if they will have a good time with me. It does not necessarily mean that when a person is silent he is not aware of his surroundings. It is the other way around most of the time. Regardless, I am a professional facilitator and can engage a lot of people in seminar or training. This is another story of my life. In terms of work, I have the skills to facilitate and the shyness will be kept for a while.

I know you teach English. I think being a teacher may be helpful for you to become less shy in front of people. As a teacher, you have to face to different people everyday. Perhaps you can be the boss to the children, but you have to also cope with the parents, too.

@youless In terms of professional skills, I am not shy teaching with the students. I am catering all types of students from your country. It is not limited to children only. Some of them are professionals like you and working in different companies. I am shy if it is not related to work. I tend to be a bit reserve if not familiar with the person that I am talking with.

Yeah, I tend to be more reserved when I first meet people as well. But after I get to know them, it's shameless me on the loose.

I usually take some time to open up and mingle with new people. People might think that I have attitude problem , but when I am all comfortable , they are bound to change their opinion. I am a marketing person , so I too have to speak, convince and involve people in my conversation. But when it come to real life scenario , I am quite choosy in that sense.

@Shayani I can socialize with people. But I do a lot of observation. Since people have different personalities. Once I am familiar with them, then that's the time I am going to do my first move. I don't want to approach someone if I don't know them much.

hey buddy... eveyone here is shy ...it just depends how comfortable u feel...so just smile and talk to everyone u wish to....everyone is a friend here....:)
