I believe it comes from many sources, the main ones being:
The first and most obvious is fear of the unknown. They fear such things could happen, because the earth's end is the worst thing that could happen.
The second, is that natural events have happened in the past changing the eviornment of the earth. The plates have shifted in the past this iswhy thecontinents look as if they are puzzle pieces. At one time itwas all one land mass.
Animals and Dinosaurs were wiped out a few times by asteroids and ice ages.
Therefore its proof that these events could at some point happen. It may not end the earth but it could end the existence of mankind.
Thats what they are afraid of,

Absolutely, there is always the chance for those events. Hopefully, we could survive that.
But another end, human itself is the main source of destruction. Human have done lots of damages to earth and the atmosphere.

@nimeshsrestha Exactly. That's the ironic part. These things have happened naturally, without influence in the past.
Mankind will eventually make something happen due its actions.

@indiandevil lately I have seen a documentary on Antarctica. Hundred years ago, it was green and beautiful. Now it's chill and ice. And the ice has started melting. If few portion is to be melt, the sea level will rise, resulting in destruction of many houses and dwelling. It is the real issue now.

It might be because of the movies about the end of the world. If you actually think about it, that might actually happen.

It could wipe out the existence of human on earth. We ourselves are destructing the beautiful planet.
