Keeping in touch with distant friends.

It is so easy to take friendships for granted, especially the long term ones. Living far away from such old friends I realise how easily lack of frequent contact can take the edge off of what has always been a vibrant relationship.
I shall be visiting some of those old friends soon, we have kept the contact going with Skype and emails but it isn't quite the same as sitting down together with leisure time to chat and share our days.
My children are able to fly here and make the necessary effort but for the old friends it has become impossible. They are not fit enough for the journey, flying is off the agenda for all of them now. We are no younger but we are fitter so we can do it. We will return home exhausted because our friends do not live near one another, so much driving awaits us.
The advice to do things while you are still able, has become relevant to us now.

internet contact can never fully compensate for actually being with our best friends and family

@JudyEv totally agree - I have ended up talking to people on webcams which I just find un-nerving

I agree. My BFF lives in Oklahoma and me in Idaho. I often go for several days without hearing from her. We usually interact on Facebook. It is weird when I don't hear from her. I have to find some funny thing to send her or remind her of. I have known her nearly all of my life.

most of my family live in other states, they prefer to message me on fb, so be it. A lot of people moved away due to work transfers. Or married, and have kids and just don't have the time to stay in touch much. I enjoy hearing from them when they have time. I enjoy seeing friends and family that live locally.

That's why while we can we should travel .
Though , when we get old and weak we can just stay home and connect at FB and Skype . But at least we can still see each other.

I am glad you are still able to travel and get around. It will be nice for you to see old friends again. Skype was a wonderful creation.

It is good that you are going to visit your friends. I'm sure it will be worth all the effort involved. That is the sad part about getting old and not living near each other. I don't know how many more trips we can take to Ireland to see our son either. At some point we'll have to wait for him to visit us.
