Why do people scam?

Philippines
March 10, 2016 3:56am CST
A lot can be seen in the news about people running away with other people's money. I really feel bad about this because these people have entrusted their hard earned money to someone who promised that they will have financial freedom in a few years time. I am not sure if scamming people can be attributed to poverty or just because.

90 Percent is why their is poverty. People rob more than one way. The smart do it legally the not so smart steal peoples purses so to take. Politicians just do it in front of our faces. OK will stop now, happy thoughts. lol

I wonder what you think is a way to stop, or at least reduce this from happening. What should we do to keep people from even thinking about earning through scams? What would help make people more honest?

@mrdprince I would say let people work in a field that they like. Most people are forced to take work they do not like because that is the only way to make a livable wage. People get fed up and try to make the easy money. Those forced to take work and do not get paid a livable wage are probably more likely to come up with some sort of hustle. Rich people who scam and people of power just do it because they are greedy and like to be in control of people. They also like to think they are better than people. Not sure how we fix them. Might be impossible in a free market as they call it.

You know what is sad? Some scammers started with good intentions but things didnt go the way they expected it to be. They end up failing and scamming is their only way out. Some people scam because they were intentionally malicious and greedy while others are victims of the circumstances.

Hmmm I never thought of it that way @captalbertwhisker. So do you mean they got overwhelmed with the earnings and then decided it is better to ran away with the money? I agree on your second statement.

@CaptAlbertWhisker I see you mean they have not anticipated a point wherein there will come a time that their model will reach its saturation point or something like that.

I totally agree with this.

i cant explain exactly why they do what they do. some of them are healthy enough, not disable and capable to find a decent job. some of them chose the easy road.. some of them lack guidance. some of them lack God.

@funkeyguhl what do you mean by member's word? you mean if a person(a member) from some company tell you something not true?
• Philippines
12 Mar 16
@MGjhaud what I mean is usually they bombard you with so-called truths / testimonials from their members that it's a legit business, etc.
• Philippines
12 Mar 16
Lack of God's guidance can be one of them and I also research I guess. You can never really trust 'just' the member's word for it right?

Scamming happens simply because people like easy money. In many cases, especially online, that is true for the scammer as well as the person scammed. It has nothing to do with poverty, because if you are willing to work you will find some way to earn money honestly. People scam because they don't want to work or earn money honestly.

That is true though the internet does not technically offer easy money because you still need to do something in order for your earnings to be generated but the idea of not doing anything is what makes it more attractive and this does not happen online but offline as well. Realizing it now, I guess it is not entirely about poverty because some do scam because they just want to have fun.

There are plenty of reasons why people scam. Poverty may be one reason. Some people like taking advantage of people, as well. Whatever the reasons, I still feel bad for the victims.

You are right, there are a lot of reasons and some to be quite honest, do not even feel one bit sorry for what they have done. That is really sad.

Nowadays scam and being a victim of some scam has become common and is evident in each and every nation. People cannot control the greed of money and making more and more money, Many people are okay earning through hard work, effort and lot of hassles , but many want to go for a short cut. And this kind of scams are the results of shortcuts for making money. I seriously pity those who fall victim of this kind of trap and loose all that they have earned.

Well, everyone dreams of the good life but some are lured that they can enjoy that life now by investing on these scam companies. I know your mind should tell you that it's impossible but what if it's true? I am thinking that is the thought process.

@funkeyguhl Many people are risk taker and may be they want to see the positive side of it. Most of these fraud companies takes advantage of this emotion in people. But these companies mostly target rural areas since there people crave for a well being life , so extracting their hard earning become easy for them. I have seen thousands of family shattered being the victim of this kind of fraudulence, and most pathetic part is they are helpless and they have nothing to do.

I always do not understand this as well. I don't know how these people can do that to others. Perhaps they were not brought up with good values, and they do not think scamming is not a good act. Some people think money is much more important than the rest.

@funkeyguhl That's why I always think parents do play very important role. If the parents do not set up a good role model, the children will not follow.

@kaka135 that is true that it starts in the core which is family but of course, peers are also a big factor in this as well.

Yes, sadly I think this is the truth. Probably also they are practicing the art of survival - surviving from their lifestyle, the community they wanted to be part of.

people scam others because they have no dignity and no respect for others. These are attributes that we are not taught when growing up. In the old days, the past, we were always taught by our parents to respect others. It is no longer the case in modern times.

@funkeyguhl Well, that is the whole point of life. There are pressures all around us each day from the day of birth till the day we die. It is getting to easy for us to just go with the flow instead of doing what is right, don't yo think? What must we do to stop this?
• Philippines
21 Mar 16
Well, there can be two sides. One is that they are downright bad or the other is they are also a victim of the people at the top. At times, parents do a lot of lecturing about it but when they are pressured or influenced by friends that becomes a problem.

Poverty of course is one major factor though we can say that some scammers are not from the lowest class of society. I guess the root of all these is the greed for money and material things.

@funkeyguhl But as thay say, the end does not justifies the mean. The act is bad so it is. No matter how good the intention would be.

@LdeL0318 that is true and it also feels good that you are earning money not from scamming people but on legal ways

You are right but I also think they do want to have or provide a certain quality of life for their family however the problem is it is done in bad taste.

Poverty is one of the contributory factor for creating a human to be monster in the society. Or it simply because the person has its bad character in nature.

desperation. some people just don't have other opportunities others have because of lack of education or simply didn't study.
• Philippines
12 Mar 16
Hmm, have you noticed that most of the scammers are actually educated? They would use people who were not able to complete their studies but would want a decent life than what they have now. I think these scammers already had their A game planned.

People scam because they need funds that will finance their lucrative lifestyle.
• Philippines
12 Mar 16
it can be that too though I also think some scam because they want the lifestyle of their idol or to rub elbows with the rich and famous.

Scamming is tapping into an unknown opportunity and making money. Its an art. If money is your biggest motive, you dont think about the consequences of cheating people. Scams are mostly run by rich people, coz they want to become richer. They dont hold much regard for humanity.

Very well put. It is indeed just the love of the money and the more the better. I love money but not enough to scam someone.

@mrdprince I do not love money (not sure about the level of love that you have). I just use it to buy my needs and wants. Though I would not scam a person to earn a decent amount of money.

I know and a lot of people are really good at it. There are other forms of making money that does not include scamming unless that person is really determined to make it big without really caring about who ends up in the bin. It might be the nouveau riche? I guess for people who have old money, they do not go into that line of business -- is it even called a business? I wonder.
