Photo Study – L S Lowry Statue – Mottram, Salford

The famous Matchstick Men artist from Salford was quite a lonely figure so this statue of him sitting alone on a bench in a remote outpost of Greater Manchester seems rather apt. There are other monuments to him in the Manchester/Salford twin cities, with a statue in Sam’s Chop House, Manchester, where Lowry ate and drank, and of course The Lowry Centre in Salford Quays displays many of his wonderful paintings. He was also commemorated in a cheesy pop song called Matchstick Men and Matchstick Cats & Dogs by Brian & Michael. He was however an intensely private, introspective and quite reclusive figure and so the Mottram statue seems rather apt in its capture of a man who often just went away to quiet places to think about life and art undisturbed. I have never heard of him. Matchstick men must be a British thing.

I like the figure. It shows the real mystery life of matchstick man. You did a great shot here.

@Jessicalynnt friends and I used used to stand and point into the sky as if we had seen something amazing and then watch people craning their necks to see what we must be looking at

@arthurchappell in college me and my late friend used to get a group together and fake playing a really odd game with no rules. We'd just make things up and pretend to be playing together, just to chortle over all the people who would stop and trrrryyy to figure out what in the world we were playing!

Is the same song as "Pictures of Matchstick Men?" I always liked that one.

@teamfreak16 no pictures of Matchstick Men was an early Status Quo record - great one too - this is the Brian & Michael song
Duo Brian and Michael singing their #1 hit 'Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs' on Top of the Pops in 1978. If you liked this clip then subscribe to...

Love the statue, I can just see him sketching quietly there while the rest of the world passes by.
