What to do with things

I am trying to clean out some boxes that I have moved with me from the northeast to Florida. They are still in a closet in the boxes I packed them in, almost 2 years ago. I have things from my grandmother, a big picture of her before she came to America. I do not know what to do with this picture as it is large and of course very old. I also have about 10 other large frames with multiple pictures in it. I had them all hanging in the house we had in Pennsylvania as it was a big house and had lots of walls. I don't want to overpower the rooms as it is a lot smaller here than up north. Any suggestions?

Even if you don't hang them up, I suggest keeping them or giving them to a family member that will think they are important.

@mommaj This family is so large I wouldn't even know who to give it to. I will look into that though as it should stay in the family.

@mommaj The other problem is we are all over the United States and I would have to ship it and I would be afraid it would get ruined. Maybe I should have it appraised before I do anything.

you can have it resized but thats a lot of work cause you have to get a new frame for it. but you said thats your moms picture, i guess thats an old memorabilia so maybe you can find a spot for those important/valuable ones and have the rest resized.

@ramapo17 oh im sorry i missed that, u did say its your grandmothers picture on your post. anyway, pictures can be scanned and have it resized to how much space youve got so it wont stay in that box. but if you prefer it untouched, im sure theres a perfect place for it somewhere.

@MGjhaud I have had it so long and since we moved it has been in a box. It should be hanging up as I am sure the frame is now worth a lot of money. My grandmother came to America from Germany and I believe that is where this picture came from. It is funny as my dad was the 11th child and the baby of the family. How he got the picture before any of his sisters is a mystery to me.

I think it would be nice to hang old frames in the living room. I am sure it would appear so great.

My husband had some large old photos of his grandparents and I had one of mine, so we hung them in the guest room since anyone who might use that room would be family.

That is a good idea. I can't even think of giving it away. It's over 100 years old.

You could sell them in an auction or yard sale. Or maybe you could make smaller copies of the pictures and frame those up instead? :D

@Sei_Ryoku that is another good idea. If I decide to give it to another family member I will take pictures of it and frame them as smaller pictures.

Why don't you get these pictures scanned and put in one of the old frame in a collage ...this way all photos will be preserved and the rest of frames you can put away in the box

That is a great idea. Where would I take them to scan them or can I do that on my own printer?

@Lazyblogs That is true. I will have to get my act together and do something about this. Thanks for the advice.

@ramapo17 well its better if you get it done from somewhere ..because you dont want to take risk of damaging them..as memories are related to them

If the pictres are an important part of family history I would suggest perhaps going to a place that can help restore some of the older pictures, have several copies made of each picture (enough for family members who would have interest and then make scrapbooks with the pictures that will relate family history (copies of pictures could be downsized to fit the book. You could decorate each page such as having a picture of a ship from the time your grandmother came to America with a short statement about coming here.
