Have You Ever Heard a Deer Screech?

Well, maybe "screech" is a bit of an exaggeration. More of a loud snort, really, with screechy overtones.
Today while doing some chores around the house, I heard that tell tale sound and knew something was up. Was there a cougar in the yard? (My neighbour saw some scat earlier in the week along a trail nearby.)
I walked out to the yard so as not to cause the deer to run away altogether and looked towards the spot where they were staring, stomping their front hoofs and snorting in their high pitched way.
Our two five month old kittens I mentioned getting a few weeks ago were lounging in the sun and looking straight at the deer. It made me laugh. The deer knew the cats were semi-dangerous, in that they'd certainly be had they been 10 to 20 times bigger. But who could be afraid of these two fuzz balls?
Unless you were a mouse, perhaps.

@Sheilamarie78 There are some deer crossings warnings but I haven't seen one. Not very common in my area. I'd be scared to see one in person. But that's silly and cute that the deers were scared of the kittens

@infatuatedbby It's seldom a deer is dangerous to a human, unless the person poses a danger to her fawn or a male deer is overly frisky. They are mostly skittish and run away.

We often get a herd munching on the bushes right in front of our window.

@Sheilamarie78 - Which might explain the absence of flowers in our little complex.

I'd heard it multiple times before I realized it was the deer making the noise. Now I recognize their danger sound and always go running to the windows to see what's lurking.

@softbabe44 Considering the predators who go after deer, knowing could be crucial! But you know that, living in Washington as you do.

@Sheilamarie78 Carabao is our national animal, this is common only in remote countryside nowadays especially in the fields where they are being used to plow the fields.

I love hearing about the animals in different places. Deer are very common here.
Judy Evans @JudyEv talks about the kangaroos that abound in Australia, while to me they are an exotic species. Is there an animal in the Philippines that is common but that we might find unusual in North America?

Hey, if a dog gets scared to the cat even though it's a family member, how much more if it's the deers. I mean i saw a video about a cat who stood against two alligators. They're little lions and tigers and very much territorial. yup cute and fiercely deadly.
When two hungry, vicious alligators emerge from the Bayou swamp, Mugsy the CAT, leaps into action to protect a boy from becoming their lunch. See for yoursel...

Just like rabbits -- they don't usually say anything which makes their sounds so surprising.

They aren't afraid ot the kittens, but they were warning them. Our deer are quiet used to seeing Ruby in the yard but they sense that Ruby is behind a fence and can't get to them so they eat their corn and once in a while give a little snort.

You are right. I suppose they'll get used to seeing them soon, but the cats are new to our yard. The "cats" the deer are more familiar with locally are cougars and bobcats.

Very cute story. I can imagine the deer wondering if they would be chased. "well lets see, for every jump we take those short legged devils need to take 50 steps so I think we're safe today, just don't ignore them and let them get closer....)

It's fun imagining what the deer might be thinking! They've been keeping up their reactions to the cats so far.

My donkeys do something similar @Sheilamarie78 . I think it's a snort, yawn, sneeze, clearing of the throat; all at the same time sound.

Large wildcats, such as cougars, really are a danger to them. I guess they recognized the similarity.

Our kangaroos rarely make any noise at all although very occasionally they will give a kind of 'cough'. If they want to warn the others of a potential danger, they will thump their hind leg. It makes quite a noise and the mob usually instantly disappear.

Deer very seldom make any noise either, which is why hearing this sound is odd.
